  2. About the Inventor • Edward Binney and Harold Smith co-invented Crayola Crayons • They were cousins • They got the name from Edward Binney’s wife Alice • She combined craie (French for chalk)and oleaginous( the oily Paraffin wax)to make the word Crayola

About the Factory • The Crayola company is based in Forks Township, North Hampton County, Pennsylvania • October 2003 the factory unveiled Worlds largest Crayola Crayon • It weighed 1,500 pounds and it was 15 feet tall. The crayon was made by left over crayon bits sent by children all around the world. • The official 100 billionth crayon was molded by Fred Rodgers on Feb 1996 at the plant in Easton, Pennsylvania

  4. In the Factory • Each mold makes 650 crayons a minute • They inspect each crayon to make sure there are no defects • They put them through a metal detector to make sure there is no metal in them • The crayons melt at 105 degrees • 12 million crayons weighs about 120,000 pounds

About the Crayons • They make 12 million crayons a day • The 150 pack features a sharpener on the back, 118 regular colors, 16 glitter crayons, and 15 Metallic FX crayons • They come in scented, washable, and dry erase forms. There are even crayons where you can draw on windows and then erase them when you want them gone. • The factory's mascot’s name is Tip

How they Sold • 1903 they had 8 crayons in a box • 1949-1957 there were 48 crayons in a box • 1958-1971 there were 64 crayons in a box • 1972-1989 there were 72 crayons in a box • 1990-1992 there were 80 crayons in a box • 1993 there were 96 crayons in a box • And in 1998 there were 120 crayons in a box • The 8 count box sold for a nickel • They introduced 400 crayons since 1903 • 13 colors have been retired • In 2001 they introduced metallic FX there were 12

Anything Else I Need to Add • 1st came chalk then the crayons followed by colored pencils, markers, paint, and modeling clay • All Crayola products are non toxic • They are produced and sold in over 80 countries • Offically retired colors are Blue Grey, Lemon Yellow, Orange Red, Orange Yellow, Violet Blue, Maize, Green Blue, Raw Limber, Thistle, Blizzard Blue, Mulberry, Teal Blue, and Magic Mist

  8. More About Them • In 1998 USPS issued a 32 cent stamp to commemorate Crayola • Cultural Sensitive names were changed: Flesh went to Peach and Indian Red went to Chestnut • The Smithsonian Museum of American History maintains a collection of original 64 color boxes
