Types of Signs: Regulatory Regulatory Laws you must obey Help control traffic Most important: Stop and yield (red and black) All others are white squares/rectangles with red/black lettering Also direct traffic what direction it should move in (one way, right turn only ect) Control parking and passing regulations

Types of Signs: Warning Warning Avoid a surprise situation Shape: Diamond- most common Circle- ex. railroad warning Pentagon- ex. school crossing Pennant- ex. no passing zone Background: Yellow Warning of danger up ahead. Tells driver to slow down and proceed cautiously Symbols/Lettering: Black Other warning sign Construction signs Orange

Types of Signs: Guide Guide Provides a variety of information Mark routes, intersections, service areas, and other points of interest or information Local, state, US, and interstate route signs White Information/ distance- Green Highway service (fuel, food, lodging, and nearby hospital) Blue Recreation area or cultural points of interest Brown
6. Partner Work Take the list you made at the beginning of class of all the signs you could name. Circle the ones we discussed and you had Star the ones you had and we did not mention List 5 more that you did not have and we discussed. Share with partner, then class discussion
7. International Signs International signs- Convey information with symbols rather than words. International drivers can travel to other countries and understand the signs without having to learn the language.
8. Review What do the eight shapes and colors of traffic signs mean? What action should you take at STOP, YIELD, and speed limit signs? What are some situations where warning signs might be used? What information do guide signs and international signs provide? Pick 3 questions and answer them on a separate sheet on paper.
9. Traffic Lights Traffic lights, arrows, flashing signals, and pedestrian signals are used to help traffic flow smoothly. Green- Bottom or right of the traffic signal Proceed only if intersection is clear Check left, front, and right Yellow-center of traffic signal Make every effort to stop safely If you can not proceed with caution Red- Top or left of traffic signal Must come to full stop Stop behind line, crosswalk, or before entering the intersection

Right and Left Turns on Red Right-Turn-on-Red All states now allow drivers to make a right-turn-on-red Must come to a complete stop, just like a stop sign Move to where you can see clearly You must yield the right of way to any vehicle or pedestrian in, or approaching, the intersection Left-Turn-on-Red Some states permit this type of turn from a one-way street to another one-way street Must also come to complete stop Few allow left-turns on a red light from a left turn lane into a one-way street. Check local laws

Flashing Signals and Arrows Flashing signal Alerts drivers to dangerous conditions or tells them to stop Seen at intersections and other dangerous locations Full stop at flashing red signal Slow down at yellow flashing and proceed only when intersection is clear Arrows Green arrow- proceed in that shown direction Remember to yield to pedestrians and other traffic Yellow arrow- warning, a red arrow is about to appear Red arrow- STOP you may not go in that direction

Lane signals Signal, usually overhead, that tells whether a lane can or cannot be used at a specific time Pedestrian signals Signal used at heavy traffic intersections that tells pedestrians whether they should walk or wait Officer’s signal Always obey signals given by officers even if they contradict the traffic signal

Review Break into 4 groups Each group will be given a different intersection on a poster board with a different traffic light and the direction their car is headed Students will have to explain and show what they as the driver have to do as they approach the intersection Groups will present to the class

Roadway Markings Video Yellow Lines Video Yellow lines- separate traffic in opposite directions Two solid yellow lines that divide traffic prohibit passing that involves crossing the solid yellow line. Solid line- cannot pass, divides traffic Broken line- driver may pass only when no traffic is coming from the opposite direction

Roadway Markings White Lines White lines- Separate traffic in same direction Also mark crosswalks and stop lines White arrows -tell you when and where to turn When accompanied with the word “ONLY” the driver must continue in the direction of the arrow Broken line- Separate lanes of traffic that are moving in the same direction Solid line- Keeps drivers in their lane and restricts lane changing, and cannot cross

Other Roadway Markings Rumble strips- Sections of rough pavement intended to alert drivers of approaching roadway construction, tollbooth plaza, or other traffic conditions Alert you through the noise in your tiers when moving over them Railroad School Crossing No Parking Handicapped Parking Only
17. Review What is the difference between a broken line on the road or a solid line and explain what is different if one is white or yellow?
18. Project Create a poster with a partner of a neighborhood containing: 5 traffic lights 5 signs 5 different intersections 5 lines (yellow and white combined)
