International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) • formed in 1971 • policy research institute working for more sustainable and equitable global development • based in London, works globally through a network of long-term partners • Research Groups: Human Settlements; Climate Change; Natural Resources; Sustainable Markets • www.iied.org

Human Settlements Group • achieving socially and environmentally beneficial urbanization (including land, shelter, water and sanitation) • reducing urban poverty: engaging with and supporting federations of the urban poor • adapting cities to climate change • securing rural-urban synergies: sustainable flows of people, capital, water, waste, food

  4. Climate Change Group • equitable outcomes from climate change negotiations: working with LDC negotiators • building adaptive capacity of government and civil society actors: e.g. Capacity Strengthening in the Least Developed Countries for Adaptation to Climate Change (CLACC) • generating awareness and understanding of climate change, poverty and sustainable development for advocacy purposes

Climate Change and Cities • research with partners (CLACC) • local organizations and adaptation • research areas: land and shelter; poverty; gender; rural-urban linkages; water and sanitation; ecosystems; community-based adaptation • global partners: UN-Habitat (GRHS, CCCI); World Bank; UNDP; IFRC; IPCC • publishing: Environment and Urbanization; teaching (DPU@UCL)
