  1. Web Software Comparison By Taylor Coppicus

  2. Definition: A Blog is an on-line journal that is used to express thoughts, feelings and ideas about a certain topic, or idea. Condensed term for “web-log”. Blogs Advantages Disadvantages • Easy to create • Easy to maintain • Search-engine Friendly • User interaction with visitors • Many hosts are free • Can be maintained by more than one person. • Hard to maintain daily • Comments can be rude • Limited templates on free hosts • Certain rules can dictate blog size • Can be maintained by more than one person.

  3. Wikis Definition: A collaborative web page that any person can edit. Advantages Disadvantages • Easy to use • Links • Mistakes can be fixed by anyone. • Can be opened by most browsers • Web-based • Anyone may edit • Too many links can cause confusion • Information may become distorted easily. • Cannot have extremely complex content • Usually a single topic page

  4. FrontPage Definition: Web site authoring software written and distributed by Microsoft Advantages Disadvantages • Tailored for Internet Explorer • Add graphics • Numerous buttons • Interacts with other MS products • Ready-to-use templates • Recently replaced in 2006 • Only for internet Explorer • Have to know technical ‘language’ most of the time

  5. Dreamweaver Definition: A web design program from Adobe. Allows both hands-on code editing and a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface. Advantages Disadvantages • Preview in browser • More user-friendly • Can create own template • Cleaner HTML code • Looks best in IE, Netscape, Opera • Interacts with other macromedia products • Available in 17 languages • Can create pages that are too large • Can perform poorly • Hard to add template to more than 700 pages • Doesn’t handle errors well

  6. So Which would I Use? Blogs vs. Wikis FrontPage vs. Dreamweaver I would prefer a blog • Want to be able to have more than one topic in a site • Want comments for critique • Want individual look on site I would prefer FrontPage • Comfortable with Microsoft Programs • Want to be able to have minor mistakes in design • Like the pre-made template ideas.
