  18. How is a student nominated for AIG in New Hanover County? A student may be nominated in various ways: • Screening by GES and school staff •Self-nomination • Peer nomination •Parent nomination •Teacher nomination

  19. North Carolina AIG State Program Standards Practice 1d states that the district program will initiate “screening, referral, and identification procedures that respond to traditionally under-represented populations of the gifted and are responsive to the LEA demographics.”

Teacher and parent checklists to indicate interest, motivation, behavior, performance data Student survey to indicate interests and motivation Grades and other relevant data Aptitude (Cognitive Abilities Test or CogAT) Achievement (Iowa Test of Basic Skills or ITBS) Work samples to indicate performance

  23. What is the criteria to qualify for AIG in New Hanover County? The five criteria reviewed when considering a student for the AIG program are the same at every school. A student must meet 4 out of the 5 criteria to qualify for AIG.

  24. What other data can we collect to encourage increased AIG identification of under-represented populations? Portfolio/Building a Body of Evidence Look at evidence in comparison with peers USTARS~Plus Program Created for under-represented pops. at-potential vs. at-risk Teacher Observation of Potential in Students Professional Development Cumberland County Alternative indicators Compare to others of his/her age, experience, or environment Establish student history (socio-economic, divorce/trauma, language, transience)

  27. What does the IG label mean for traditionally under-represented populations in AIG? Data collected will be based on thinking skills versus accuracy Students with less “life experience” will not be at a disadvantage-The Kindergarten Effect Opportunities to demonstrate skills and talents that are not easily demonstrated on a pencil/paper test
