  1. Looking at the Moon By Kit Pearson

  2. Who is kit Pearson? • Kit Pearson was a child with two younger brothers, Ron and Ian. Pearson always found great comfort in reading as she was very shy. When kit was eight her family moved to Vancouver and lived there for four great years. She liked the sea and the mountains and made many friends, but when she turned thirteen her family moved back to Edmonton and once again she felt out of place and started to read to fill up the time. One of her inspiring books was Emily of New Moon which inspired her to become a writer. For high school she went back to Vancouver and attended a boarding school where she made many friends. After university she became a librarian. After publishing her first book she could write full time and for the next twenty years she settled down in Vancouver to write. After a while she moved to Victoria with a friend and continued to write. Some of her books included The Daring Game, A handful of time, The guest of war trilogy, Awake and Dreaming, A perfect Gentle Knight, and much, much, more.

  4. Main Characters

  5. Norah stoakes • Norah Stoakes is a thirteen year old. She used to live in London, at least up until the second world war. Then she and her brother Gavin took a ship three years ago to Canada to become war guest of a family. Aunt Florence and Aunt Mary take them in. Norah doesn’t want to fall in love, or grow up. All she really wants is to go back to London to live with her family and friends.

  6. Gavin Stoakes • Gavin is Norah's eight year old little brother. Because he came to Canada when he was only five, he barely remembers London and his mum and dad. Gavin has a stuffed elephant named creature which he loves dearly. Gavin practically considers Aunt Florence and Aunt Mary his own family.

  7. Andrew Ogilvie • Andrew is one of Aunt Florence's Grandson’s and nineteen. Norah can’t help but fall in love for the first time with him. He has the perfect gray-green eyes, a tan, and wavy brown hair. Andrew hasn’t been to Gairloch since he was little, and can’t wait to see his family and cousins. Andrew, being nineteen, is expected to go and fight in the war but all he wants is to be a famous actor.

  8. Aunt Florence • Aunt Florence took Gavin and Norah in as war guests and is very wealthy. She treats them like her own children and brings them to Gairloch for the annual family reunion every summer. Aunt Florence can be strict at times but all in all has their best intentions at heart.

  9. Aunt Catherine • Aunt Catherine is Norah’s favourite aunt. She is sort of like Norah – an outsider. She was married into the family and went to London for a while so she has a slight British accent. In a way Norah and her are very alike.

  10. Aunt Mary • Aunt Mary is calm and placid. She is cool and collected, but lately she’s been a little sidetracked. Aunt Mary even confines a secret with Norah! She’s nice but lately she has been going to the city claiming to get a dress fit but there’s clues that suggest she’s doing something else. What could simple Aunt Mary be doing?

  11. Uncle reg • Uncle Reg almost joined the war, but got turned down because of his eye-sight. He was really disappointed about this, and is proud that Andrew is joining up even after Hugh died when he went to war. Uncle Reg also teaches Norah how to use a boat.

  12. Summary • Norah and her brother Gavin are war guest’s from London living in Canada for the past three years. They live with a wealthy family but Norah just wants to go back to London. Norah has gone to Gairloch a island every summer and this is no exception. All of the relatives go there every summer and meet. But the bad part is all the girls want to talk about is love – something she doesn’t care for. That is until Andrew comes to Gairloch. He’s a cute, funny, intelligent cousin and she falls in love. The only problem – he doesn’t like her back.

  13. Excerpt from the book • Looking at the Moon page 63: • Frank Sinatra’s smooth voice filled the space. The sound was tinny and the needle scratched, but having music made the boathouse even cosier. Each of the girls curled up on her bed and hummed along. “You’ll never know just how much I care...” That’s me! Thought Norah. Turning to the wall to hide her blushing cheeks she mouthed, “I love you.” the revelation was still a shock – like a bursting out of her old skin and finding a fragile new one underneath.
