  2. Birth and naming of John (1:57-66) • Elisabeth’s baby is born (Vv.57,58) • Circumcision and naming of John (Vv.59-66) • On 8th day according to Law of Moses (Lev. 12:3) • Zacharais recorded the name John on a tablet. • Tongue was “loosed” and first words were of praise to God.

  3. Zacharias’ Prophesy 1:67-79 • Filled with the Holy Spirit, he began to praise God and prophesy • “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel” • He has visited and redeemed His people (Gal. 3:26-29) • Horn – a symbol of power (Dan. 8:5-7); See Heb. 2:14-15

  4. Zacharias’ Prophesy 1:67-79 • God spoke through prophets (Heb. 1:1; 1 Pet. 1:10-12; Acts 10:43) • Jesus opened the understanding of His disciples about these prophesies. (Lk. 24:27, 32, 44-47) • Inspired men applied these scriptures to Jesus: • He would die for our transgression.Isa. 53:1-7Acts 8:32-35 • He would be raised from the dead to sit at God’s right hand. Psm. 16:10; 110:1 Acts 2:25-27, 34-36 • He would be given dominion, glory and a kingdom. Dan. 7:13-14 Eph. 1:20-23 • He would be a prophet like Moses whose word must be obeyed.Deut. 18:15-18Acts 3:22-23

  5. Zacharias’ Prophesy 1:67-79 • (Vv.71-73) God was faithful to His promise to Abraham. • (Vv.74-75) Side Note: Through Christ, all who serve Him will do so without fear of enemies. (Rom. 8:31-39; Eph. 6:10-18) • Land/nation promises was fulfilled. (Josh. 21:43-45; 23:14). • These blessings and promises are spiritual, applying to Jews and Gentiles.

Zacharias’ Prophesy 1:67-79 • (Vv.76-80) John’s mission • Prophet (“the prophet of the Highest”) Matt. 14:5; 21:26; Mk. 11:32; Lk. 20:6 • Preparer (prepare the way) Isa. 40:3; Mal. 3:1; Matt. 3:3 • Jesus acknowledged John’s work (Matt. 11:9-15 and Lk. 7:26-30.) • Preacher (baptism of repentance for remission of sins) – imparting the “knowledge of salvation” Lk. 3:3; 7:29-30; Acts 19:1-5

  7. V.80 John grew and became strong in spirit and was in the desert (wilderness).Matt. 3:1-6

  8. Birth of Jesus 2:1-7 • About 6 mos. between Ch. 1 and vs. 1 of Ch. 2. • Why Bethlehem and not Nazareth? • Firstborn Son (v.6) • Mary would have other children (Matt. 13:55; Mk. 6:3) • Jesus, God’s Son - born in a stable • A lowly birth, not as an earthly king. (Matt. 6:19-21) • Should humble us. (2 Cor. 8:9)

Sequence of Events (Vv 8-24) • Angels Proclaimed Birth to Shepherds • “in the field keeping watch over their flock by night” –probably spring or early summer. • Date not recorded. • Constantine established Dec. 25. • As a sign, they would find the babe in city of David (Bethlehem), lying in a manger. • This babe was the Savior, Christ the Lord. • Circumcised on the 8th day. • At 40 days, presented at the Temple.

The Testimony of Simeon 2:25-35 • Just and devout; the Holy Spirit was upon him • Waiting for the consolation of Israel (the Messiah) - comfort and redemption • Holy Spirit’s revelation – He would not die until he had seen the Christ • Directed by the Spirit to go to the temple • Took Jesus in his arms and blessed God (vv29-32) • Joseph and Mary marveled and were blessed by Simeon

  11. The Testimony of Simeon 2:25-35 • Simeon’s prophesy: Jesus was destined to cause the “fall” and “rising” of many in Israel.Fall? Rise? • Sign spoken against - object of contempt and rejection by the people • “a sword shall pierce through your own soul” – probably a prediction of the sorrow she would suffer in seeing her son rejected and crucified.

  12. The Testimony of Anna 2:36-38 • A Prophetess of God • 84 yrs old widow; married only 7 years and spent the remainder of her life in service to God. • Of the tribe of Asher (one of the 10 tribes of the Northern Kingdom) • Acknowledged and thanked God • Spoke to all about looking and longing for redemption from God through the Messiah.

  13. V.39 Joseph and Mary completed all that was required of them in Jerusalem, they returned to Nazareth, their home. • V.40 Covers Jesus’ life from age 40 days to 12 years. Read Matthew 2:12-23

  14. CHRONOLOGY OF JESUS’ EARLY YEARS (1) Shepherds visit (Luke) (2) Circumcised on 8th day (Luke) (3) Visit of the Maji (Matt. 2:1-12) (4) 40 days old - Joseph, Mary and Jesus travel to Jerusalem for sanctification of first-born son (Luke 2:22-40 (5) Flight into Egypt (Matt. 2:13-18) (6) Return to Nazareth (Matt. 2:19-23)

  15. Trip to Jerusalem at Age 12 (2:41-52)
