  1. Private Sector Activities in Domestic New and Renewable Energy Technologies EGNRET 26 Auckland, New Zealand 3-5 April 2006 Cary Bloyd

  2. The Private Sector is taking a leading role in US renewable energy development • Industry based multi-technology conferences provide a good overview of activities: • Power-Gen Renewable Energy & Fuel Conference, April 10-12, 2006, Las Vegas, NV http://pgre06.events.pennnet.com/ • 2000 Participants, 150 exhibitors, 4 international pavilions • Associations are becoming very active in linking industry to markets • The American Council On Renewable Energy • www.acore.org • American Wind Energy Association • www.awea.org • Renewable Energy Fuels Association • www.ethanolrfa.org

  3. Ethanol and Biodiesel production are expanding rapidly 2000 2006 Under Construction Ethanol Plants 54 95 33 Production Capacity (mgy) 1749 4336 1893 Production is now being reported in bpd, which was 288,000 bpd in January 2006, an increase of 8,000 bpd over December 05 Louis Dreyfus Agriculture Industries LLC plans to build the world's largest biodiesel plant in Indiana 260,000 metric tons of soybeans will be converted to 80 million gallons of biodiesel per year

  4. The private sector is also expanding the ethanol distribution infrastructure • Ford and VeraSun Energy will establish a "Midwest Ethanol Corridor" by converting 40 existing fuel pumps in Illinois and Missouri to E85. • The project will increase the availability of E85 in the region by about a third. • GM announced that it will add 26 new E85 pumps in the greater Chicago area through a partnership with VeraSun Energy and Shell • GM has started a national advertising program called “live green, go yellow” to promote E85 • http://www.gm.com/company/onlygm/

  5. US Wind Energy Increases by 35% in 2005 • A new US record of 2431 MW was installed in 2005 • Estimated value of $3 billion in 22 states (total 9149 MW) • Estimates for 2006 are at 3000 MW

  6. World trade benefited from wind development • GE Energy turbines accounted for nearly 60% of the new capacity in 2005 • Vestas turbines accounted for nearly 30% • Mitsubishi was the third largest wind turbine supplier to the U.S. market, supplying about 8% of the new capacity

  7. The Private Sector is also taking a lead with renewables and sustainability • Walmart is making investments and efficiency innovations in stores and trucking fleet to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent over the next eight years. • Walmart will also design a store that will use 30% less energy and produce 30% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their 2005 design within the next 3 years. • Two experimental stores in McKinney, Texas, and Aurora, Colorado using wind, PV and biofuel boilers have been built. • Real time information are store performance is available on the internet: http://www.walmartfacts.com/images/mckinney/flash/index/index.swf
