The federal government estimates that about 30 percent of its Medicare population is obese, and obesity contributes to chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease that are widespread among the elderly  • Obesity coverage is just the latest step in a movement by Medicare in the direction of preventive care.

  3. Barriers to Obesity Counseling • Decrease in physician diagnosis of obesity. • Lack of training in behavioral counseling. • Law confidence. • Patient noncompliance. • Cultural and socioeconomic barriers.

  4. Motivational interviewing • A counseling technique designed to enhance patient centeredness. • Unlike traditional patient education, MI does not rely on physicians. • It explores a patient's intrinsic motivation in order to achieve a behavior change.

  5. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) recommendation • Dietary and nutritional assessments • Face-to-face counseling sessions in a physician's office each week for a month, and then every other week for an additional five months. Re-evaluation /assessment after 6-7 months. • Behavioral counseling and therapy.

  6. Intensive Behavioral Intervention for Obesity “5-A framework” Developed by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF): • Assess: Ask about health risk factors and goals. • Advise: Give clear ,specific, and personalized advice. • Agree: Collaborate with senior’s interests • Assist : Help the senior achieve the goals • Arrange: Follow up.
