  1. Mr. Mizell The Enlightenment

  2. Political Update • The President of the United States has issued an executive order that raises taxes on all Americans from 25% to 40%. Products made outside of the US but sold here will receive a tax of 50% to get people to buy American. To conserve energy, there will now be a series of curfews: church only on Sunday and only those with 2nd or 3rd shift out past 11:00 pm. Shutdown of non-electric car companies. • This is set to begin on Dec 31, 2013.

  5. Government/political issues • Most governments were ruled by absolute monarchies • Monarchs have more power because Church lost power • Absolutism • Rule without limits • Monarchs have Divine Right to rule by God

  7. Economic Troubles • Conflicts/wars in Europe • Monarchs increase armies and restrict trade • Raise taxes to pay for armies and tariffs (tax) on imports – hurts economy • Government grows/economy declines • Huge Debt/angry citizens

  9. Social Changes • Renaissance – growth of trade and a middle class • Growing Middle Class - has economic power, wants political power • Scientific Revolution – people use reason in science. Want to use reason in politics/society • Improvements in education – people know the issues

  10. Overall, the Enlightenment is… • The belief that political, social, and economic problems can be solved by individuals using reason and creating their own laws. • Moving toward Democratic ideas • Liberty, Freedom, Rights, etc…

  12. Review • What is absolutism? • What did the middle class have and what did they want? • What were some of the economic issues that caused the Enlightenment? • What are some dem0cratic ideas? • What is tolerance? • How would you define rationalism? • What is the Enlightenment
