  2. Why I chose vet nursing as a career. I choose this career because I like working with animals and making animals more healthier.

  3. Facts I knew before I went to the Oamaru Clinic. #You have got to be committed to see blood, guts and lots of things. #You can be different vets. You can be a vet that goes to people if there is a problem with an animal or there is a vet nurse that assists the surgery and that is what I want to be.

  5. What you do to be a vet nurse. Veterinary Nursing Day-to-day activities include: •Anaesthesia •Nursing care of hospitalized patients •Organization and delivery of client services (eg puppy parties, weight loss clinics, rehabilitation programmes) •Client education and information •Performing or assisting with diagnostic procedures eg X-rays •Performing minor surgical procedures •Assisting with major surgical procedures Careers for veterinary nurses include: •Nurse in companion animal practices •Nurse in farm animal practices •Sales representative for animal remedy firms •Sales representative for nutrition companies •Employee or manager of animal welfare organizations eg RSPCA •Employee or manager of animal rehabilitation centres •Employee or manager of kennels or catteries •Zoo and wildlife work Training to be a veterinary nurse Numerous veterinary nursing training programmes are offered in New Zealand. The premiere training programme is the Massey University Diploma in Veterinary Nursing. •Graduates from the Diploma experience virtually 100% employment after graduation. •The Diploma offers the most hands-on practical training and experience of any course. •Diploma students are trained alongside veterinary science students by a team of highly qualified veterinary nurses and veterinarians. •Diploma students receive hands-on experience with horses and production animals. •Entry is restricted to 30 students to ensure a high quality learning experience. •The Veterinary Teaching Hospital in which the training is undertaken is a caring environment.

  6. When I went to the Oamaru Clinic this is what happened……..

  7. There was a dog with a large kidney. The dog getting a X-ray. The dog recovering from surgery

  8. The dog that got hyperthermia.

  9. The dog that had a broken leg that had to get a plate put in its leg.

  10. The dog that kept barking.

  11. If these things happen go to the Vets. Is your cat or dog is ... •Scratching at ears with feet? •Rubbing ears/face along the ground? •Shaking its head? •Have a head tilt? •Painful when being patted around head/ears scratched? •Smelly ear discharge? •Red hot inflamed ears?

A morning in the life of a vet nurse. 9:30 Got there. 11:45 Watched a dog get its tonsils out. 9:45 Watched a dog get cream on its leg. 12:00 Watched a cat get put down. 9:50 Watch a dog get a tube down its throat to make it go to sleep. 12:05 Watched the dog that was in sugary recovering from surgery. 10:00 Watched the dog have an X-ray. 10:15 Watched a dog have a wash. 12:30 Said goodbye to all of the animals and went home. 10:45: Watched the do that had a large kidney have sugary.

Facts i learnt when I was at the Oamaru Clinic. #When you put any animal down you give it twice as much as you would if you were putting it to sleep. #You have got to talk to the animal so it will calm down and then it will be quiet. #You are not allowed to pull the animal if you are taking it somewhere you have got to make it walk. #You have got to ring up and say you need your animal to come in you can’t just go to the vets and then ask because they might not have enough space. #If you are over 18 you are allowed in the X-ray or if you are under 18 you have to go out for the X-ray because it sometimes gives you a shock. #In the summer dogs swim more often which creates a warm moist ear environment ideal for infections, and grass seed problems are common. #You have to treat the animal with respect and act like it is a person.

  14. Qualifications If you want to be a vet nurse you have to have a national certificate in veterinary nursing or a national diploma in vet nursing
