  1. Endangered Species : Red Panda(Ailurus Fulgens) Prabhakar U.

  2. Species Profile Red panda : Ailurus Fulgens Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Carnivora Family: Ailuridae Genus: Ailurus Species: Fulgens

  3. Species Profile • Can be found in areas of Nepal, India, Burma, Myanmar and China • Habitat – lives in bamboo forest found on mountain ranges, cold temperatures • Terrestrial animals - live on land

  4. Species Profile • Average Height - 1.7 m (including long tail) • Average Weight - 4-6 kg (full grown) • Their anatomy built for tree climbing • Climb trees to find food and escape predators • According to the IUCN red list, the red panda population has decreased in the past decade • Decreased mainly due to loss of habitat & hunting (further explained in the next slides)

  5. Major Threats • Deforestation • Main threat towards extinction of red pandas • Humans use bamboo forests for the resources (bamboo, other trees) and the land for development • Effect of urban sprawl in rural areas and exploitation of the earths limited natural resources • As a result, The red pandas lose their habitat and their main source of food, bamboo!

  6. Major Threats • Poaching • Many Hunters have killed red pandas just for their thick red fur • The Red panda’s red fur pellet is mainly used for clothing purposes • However, It is against the law to poach animals in every country the red panda lives in

  7. Food Web Yellow Throated Marten Martes flavigula Omnivore Snow Leopard Panthera uncia Carnivore Red Panda Ailurus fulgens Omnivore Giant Panda Ailurapoda melanoleuca Omnivore Woolly Hare Lepus oiostolus Herbivore Siberian Ibex Capra sibirica Herbivore Cherry Blossom Prunus serrulata Autotrophic Golden Bamboo Bambusa vulgaris Autotrophic Sugar Cane Saccharum officinarum Autotrophic Meadow Grass Poa pratensis Autotrophic

  8. Phylum - Chordata • The Red Panda is classified under the phylum Chordata(are know as chordates) • A chordate is an animal that has or had a dorsal nerve code at one point in its life. • The dorsal nerve cord eventually develops into a back bone in vertebrates (e.g. humans).

  9. Phylum - Chordata • Other examples of chordates are: • Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) • Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) • Leopard (Panthera pardus)

  10. Consequences • The extinction of Red Pandas will lead to many problems: • Predators will lose food source (snow leopard), they will eventually die as well • Predators die, then other prey will over produce • Ecosystem will be unbalanced due to the lack of a predator, prey will over feed on vegetation • The plants they feed on will go extinct, prey will have to find another food source

  11. Consequences • Over populated prey will either find another food source, steal another animal’s food • This animal will die out, the cycle continues until most species are gone • Human life will suffer due to this lack of species because of lack of biodiversity, lack of natural resources, destruction of different ecosystems • All started due to one species extinction

  12. Consequences: Chart Red Panda goes extinct Snow leopard will lose food, go extinct Ibex, pandas will over produce Cycle will continue with different species Steal food source of another animal These animals will over feed . food supply goes extinct Ibex, panda starve, go extinct Ibex, panda have to look for another source

  13. Personal response: Is Biodiversity Important? I believe that biodiversity is a factor needed for life to exist on planet Earth. When looking at a small ecosystem like a pond, it is astounding to see how many organisms live in that one area. From the frogs, to the small micro-organisms, all life is able to coexist and sustain by working with one another. The Earth is no different than the pond, just at a larger scale. We humans are able to live due to the help of the millions of other species that live on Earth. The water we drink, the air we breathe, and the food we eat, all come from nature and are the basic necessities for human life. Every product we use daily comes from natural life. Clothes are made from cotton found on cotton plants, trees provide us with soft wood used to make paper. Rich soil is. . .

  14. Personal response: Is Biodiversity Important? . . . needed to grow crops for food. Overall biodiversity is essential for us and all organisms to survive. However, many still do not understand the importance of biodiversity. Everyday, the pollution we produce and the biomes we destroy are killing numerous species and wiping them out of existence. For example, the recent deforestation of the Amazon rainforest is destroying many different flora and fauna, some of which we have yet to learn about. If life on Earth is a suspension bridge, the species act as the cords that keep the bridge from falling. Even if one or two of these cords snap, the bridge will surely collapse. The Earth has already lost many species, so how much more loss can it withhold? People do not understand that the loss in . . .

  15. Personal response:Is Biodiversity Important? . . . biodiversity will never come back and will change life as we know it. This decrease should be taken seriously now, because there is no more time to waste. According to Bill Nye (the science guy), 17 different species are lost every hour. The real question should be how can we as humans stop the damage we are causing to the biodiversity of our planet?

  16. Action plan

  17. Action plan – Red Panda Network • Conservation organization • Help protect wild red pandas against environmental threats • Teach the importance of wildlife conservation around the world • Work with local communities to accomplish their goals • Have operations in Nepal, Burma, India and China http://redpandanetwork.org/
