  2. Plot – the related series of events that make up a story Climax- (part of the plot) the turning point of the story Emotional highpoint for the character Novel Notes

  3. Novel Notes • Conflict – the struggles between opposing forces, usually characters • Character- the individuals involved in the action of the story • Setting- the time and place, or where and when, the action occurs

  4. Novel Notes • Tone – emotional quality of the words that are chosen - the feelings of the author • Mood – the atmosphere or emotional state (fear, anger, loneliness, confusion, happiness, excitement, jealousy…)

  5. Totalitarian Government • totalitarian (tō-tāl'ĭ-târ'ē-ən) adj.   Of, relating to, being, or imposing a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life, the individual is subordinated to the state, and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed: "A totalitarian regime crushes all autonomous institutions in its drive to seize the human soul"(Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.)n.   A practitioner or supporter of such a government.

  6. Democratic Government • government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system

Vocabulary Chapters 1-5 • Defiance- resistance to authority • Enforce- make sure a rule or law is obeyed • Forbid- command someone not to do something • Intervals- intervening periods of time • Lofty- of a great height; towering above • Rare- unusual; uncommon • Scurried- moved hurriedly • Savored- greatly enjoyed

  8. Vocabulary Chapters 6-10 • Cautioned- warned • Chaos- disorder • Convince- persuade • Fatigue- exhaustion • Lopsided- crooked; off balance • Precise- exact; perfect • Protested- objected to • Scoffed- jeered; make light of something

Vocabulary Chapters 11-15 • Apparatus- appliance or device • Boundary- border; something that marks a separation • Competent- capable • Exposed- left open; bared • Harvest- time of gathering ripe crops • Intended- planned • Pristine- pure; unspoiled • Solitary- lonely • Telepathy- communication of two minds with out speaking, writing, or gesturing • Universal- shared by all

Vocabulary Chapters 16-20 • Annihilation- destroy completely • antonym- creation • Astronomical- huge; extremely large • antonym- tiny • Efficient- using what is required; using all parts well • antonym- wasteful • Permanently- forever; always • antonym- temporarily • Resolutely- having a purpose; certain • antonym- uncertain • Triumphant- celebrate; success • antonym- defeated

Vocabulary Chapters 21-25 • Cultivation- breaking up the ground where crops are grown • Desist- to stop; to cause to stand • Dreary- gloomy; cheerless • Eliminated- to expel; to remove or exclude • Enthralled- to hold; to enslave; to capture • Excess- surplus; to exceed the limit • Incredulously- unbelieving; showing disbelief

Chapter 1 Vocabulary • Shudder – verb- to tremble with a sudden convulsive movement, as from horror, fear, or cold. • Harrumphed- verb-to make a show of clearing one's throat • Reassure – verb - to restore confidence • Peered – verb - to look intently, searchingly, or with difficulty • Umpteenth – adjective – indefinite number • Runt – noun - the smallest or weakest of a litter, esp. of pigs or puppies • Recognizable – verb - to identify as something or someone previously seen, known • Protested – verb - to express strong objection

Chapter 2 • Loaned – verb - something lent for temporary use • Startled – verb - to disturb or agitate suddenly • Crouched – verb - to stoop • Skillet – noun – a frying pan • Insisted – verb - to be firm in a demand • Superstition – noun - any blindly accepted belief or notion • Hulking – noun - such as a person or object, that is bulky, clumsy, or unwieldy. • Shivered – noun - to shake with or as if with cold; tremble

Chapter 3 • Careened – verb - to lurch or swerve while in motion • Skittish – noun - moving quickly and lightly • Offended – verb -to cause displeasure, anger, resentment, or wounded feelings • Deserted – verb – to leave empty or alone; abandon • Automatically –adjective - done unconsciously or from force of habit • Slanted – verb - sloping thing or piece of ground

Chapter 4 • Beseechingly – verb - to beg eagerly for • Suspicious –adj. - full of or feeling suspicion • Curiosity – noun - the desire to learn or know about anything • Hovered – verb - to remain floating, suspended • Caravan – noun - a group of travelers • Scurried – verb - to send hurrying along

  19. Chapter 6 • Auction – noun - publicly held sale at which property or goods are sold to the highest bidder • Comment – noun - a remark, observation, or criticism • Retrieve – verb - to rescue; save

  20. Chapter 7 • Linger – verb - to dwell in thought • Rescue – noun - to free or deliver from confinement, violence, danger, or evil • Raged – verb - to act or speak with fury • Fatigue – noun - weariness from bodily or mental exertion

Chapter 8 • Complaining – verb - to express feelings of pain, dissatisfaction, • Vast – adj. of very great area or extent • Linoleum – noun - a hard, washable floor covering • Tentative – adj. - unsure; uncertain; not definite or positive • Cautious – adj. - showing or practicing caution; careful • Perch – noun - any place or object, as a sill, fence, branch • Apparatus – noun - any complex instrument or mechanism for a particular purpose • Teetering – verb - to walk or move unsteadily or unsurely • Blubbered – verb - to sob noisily • Zeal – noun - enthusiastic passion

  22. Chapter 9 • Recovered – verb - to get back; regain • Reluctant – adj. - unwilling; disinclined • Muttered – verb - to speak indistinctly in low tones • Irritable – adj. - easily irritated or annoyed

Chapter 10 • Yeast – noun - ferment; agitation • Pathetic – adj. - causing or evoking pity, sympathetic sadness, sorrow • Resignedly – adj. - humbly obedient • Disgustedly – adv. - a strong distaste; nausea; loathing • Incredulously – adj. - indicating or showing unbelief • Ceremony – noun - any formal act or observance • Guffawed – noun -   A hearty, boisterous burst of laughter • Pantomimed – noun - gestures without speech

  24. Journal Writing Topics • If you only had a vent to look ouside like Luke, what would you think the world looked like? What would you thingk other people looked like? • Would you tell you parents about Jen? Why or why not? • If you were in Luke’s situation, would you take the risk and go to Jen’s house? Why or why not? • What would you want your new name to be if you had to get a fake I.D?
