  1. Electric Toothbrush Redesign Team # 1 Nick Hedge Matt DiSanto KelciKnepp Randall Gough

  2. Design Activities • Lab 1: • Analyze external parts • Complete background research • Lab 2: • Measure noise and power source • Dissect and analyze • Customer Needs: • Survey • AHP and PCP charts • Final Design: • Morphological charts • Pugh charts

  3. Project Management • Our team did not really have one person that stood out as our leader. We worked as a group to make decisions together and split up our work. When we assigned people to projects such as concept generation we tried to do it in a way that people who had experience or had researched that topic developed those specific concepts.

  4. Customer Needs • A survey was created in order to better understand customer needs. This survey was given to 14 different people. Based upon the results of this survey an AHP chart was created of the customer needs.

  5. Customer Needs (cont.) • After finishing the first chart, we were then able to make decision on which aspects were more important than others and then compared them again with different table with weighted values. • 1. Durability • 2. Power source • 3. Different speeds • 4. Cost • 5. Comfort • 6. Portability • 7. Timer

  6. Revised Problem Statement • The chart provided us with a weighted value for each of the aspects and features to show us what the consumer wanted when buying a new toothbrush. • 1. Durability (0.319) • 2. Power Source (0.274) • 3. Different Speeds (0.129) • 4. Cost (0.034) • 5. Comfort (.035) • 6. Portability (.142) • 7. Timer (.063) • According to our surveys, the sustainability of an electric toothbrush was not a huge factor in the reason people don’t use electric toothbrushes. Customers were more concerned with the cost, grip, the ability to recharge, and noise of the toothbrush. We now work on creating a toothbrush that addresses these factors instead.

  7. External Search Activities • Lab 1 & Lab 2 • Patent Search • Product Archaeology • History of the Electric Toothbrush • Benchmarking

  8. Concept Generation • Two circular rotating oscillating brush heads • Rotating oscillating circular brush head, surrounded by rectangular non-powered bristles

  9. Concept Generation Cont. • Rotating oscillating circular brush head with smaller vibrating bristles above and below • Rotating oscillating circular head, with vibrating rectangular section below

  10. Concept Generation Cont. • Solar powered toothbrush with backup double A batteries • Solar powered toothbrush with solar powered recharge station for batteries

  11. Concept Generation Cont. • Rechargeable watch batteries- smaller than larger double AA’s • Rechargeable double A batteries with their own recharge station Simply use double A batteries, much simpler to implement, possibly cheaper, although less sustainable

  12. Concept Generation Cont. • Shaped, rubber grip for right handed people • Cheap, no rubber grip • Rubber grip, can stand on base.

  13. Concept Generation Cont. Rubber grip, cannot stand on handle Grip meant for righties or lefties, removable head Toothpaste dispenser with grip

  14. Concept Generation Cont. • Rotating oscillating mechanism- A rotating oscillating brush head is achieved using a brass gear-pinion mechanism to slow down the rotation, a four-bar linkage to convert rotational motion to oscillation, and a 3-d ball joint changing the motion from moving up to the brush head to spinning with the brush • Rotating brush head

  15. Concept generation Cont. • Vibrating brush head, vertical motion • 2 rotating brush heads • 1 circular rotating brush head, 1 vibrating

  16. Brush Head Design

  17. Energy Mechanism for Brush Head

  18. Human Factor Body Design (form)

  19. Power Generation and Power Accessories

  20. Final Design • 3600 Grip • Balanced Hour Glass Shape • 7.5 in. by 1 in. • 3 bristle part brush head • Powered by alkaline watch battery with recharger

  21. Mechanism Function (How it works) Brush Heads Gears Power Source Motor NOT TO SCALE

  22. Final Design & Customer Needs • Changes: • Comfort and Grip • Cost • Ability to be recharged • Noise level • Nonchanges: • Appearance • Portability • Sustainability
