  3. Merriwether Lewis • Born on August 18, 1774- Died October 11, 1809 • President Jefferson’s choice for his personal secretary.

  4. William Clark • Born August 1, 1770-Died September 1, 1838 • A native of Virginia he was a American Explorer, Soldier, Indian Agent and territorial Governor

  6. Assistance Along the Way • The Mandans (Indians-from what is now North Dakota) gave them food, military protection, and valuable information about the path ahead. Their most valuable help came from of Touissant Charbonneau, a French Canadian whom they hired as an interpreter, and his Shoshone wife, Sacagawea, who provided help as a guide and interpreter. Her very presence helped insure good relations with Native Americans, as Clark noted in his journal: "we find [that she] reconciles all the Indians, as to our friendly intentions -- a woman with a party of men is a token of peace."

  10. The Return • September 6, 1806 • Lewis and Clark go into the History Books as the brave explorers that documented the unknown Louisiana Territory.

  11. The Missouri Compromise • 1819 Slavery ( if admitted as a Slave state it would disrupt the balance of slave and non-slave states) • 36/30 line is established • All below would be slave states • All Above non-slave states • 1820 Missouri is admitted as a Slave State

  12. US Expansion and the Cherokee • Early 1800’s Tribes were feeling the effects of the Settlers expansion • Sequoyah (an Indian leader) developed an alphabet –this was used to publish a newspaper to give news to the tribes. • Gold Discovered on Cherokee land

  13. Indian Removal Act of 1830 • Supreme Court Case Worcester v. Georgia-led by Chief Justice John Marshall ruled the Cherokee had the right to remain • President Andrew Jackson –hero of War of 1812 responded with a famous quote he made his decision now lets see him enforce it. • Jackson forces thousands of Indians to be removed and walk the Trail of Tears.
