  1. How to incorporate quotes into an essay You need to have one per body paragraph (5) for your summative, so write this down!

  2. Quotations • Short quotations (less than 4 lines or 50 words) should flow smoothly and grammatically into your sentences and paragraphs. • Always introduce your quotations.

  3. Quotations • You may chose to construct your sentence in such a way that the quote will slide smoothly between your own words. • Roger is unable to throw stones directly at Henry because “[r]ound the squatting child [is] the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law” (Golding, 65).

  4. Quotations • Run in format: • Roger is first described as “a slight, furtive boy whom no one [knows] who [keeps] to himself with an inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy” which makes the reader think that there is something not quite right with this character (Golding, 18). • Note: citation goes at the end of the sentence.

  5. Quotations • Colon format: • Golding is able to demonstrate his message regarding humanity clearly in the following quote: “However Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of a human at once heroic and sick” (112). • Note: if you mention the author in your sentence, you do not have to include the name in the citation.

  6. The Perfect Essay What I am looking for…

  7. Introduction • Start with general statements. You should have about five. • Next, your thesis. This is the most important part of your whole essay. It is the main point you are arguing. • Last, directional statements. How are you going to prove your thesis?

  8. Introduction • In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of British school boys crash land on a deserted island. Their once civilized lives start to become savage and full of anarchy forcing them to make decisions they would otherwise not. Peter Brooks produced a 1960’s “Lord of the Flies” movie which is award winning. Although the differences between Lord of the Flies the novel and the motion picture are significant, the similarities out weigh them. The similarities and differences will be demonstrated through comparing and contrasting the two mediums.

  9. Body Paragraphs • In your compare and contrast essay, you had two body paragraphs with three points per paragraph. • For your summative, you will have three body paragraphs with three points per paragraph. • You must PEE three times per paragraph!

  10. Body Paragraphs • There are very few notable differences between the novel and movie. The first minor change in the movie is when an airplane passes overhead while in the novel it is a ship that passes by. This occurrence does not change the outcome of the story because in both scenarios the signal fire is no longer burning. This merely shows that the boys pass up an opportunity to get rescued. Another difference is the physical appearance of the boys. The film does not display the characters in the same manner as William Golding describes in writing. Ralph is made to be the most attractive and tallest of the boys, while Jack is to be less appealing and a redhead. This is very insignificant because the boys encompass the same character traits in both mediums, not affecting the plot line. Finally, the boy with the mulberry coloured birthmark fails to appear in the film. The birthmark boy’s role is taken over by Percival, who informs Ralph and the other boys about the “beasties.” Although the person playing the role changes, their purpose remains the same. These three differences between the novel and the movie reinforces the fact that the differences are minor and not very pertinent.

  11. Body Paragraphs • The similarities between the novel and the movie are much more significant. To start off, the setting of the two works of art take place on a tropical deserted island with no means of communication. If the boys did not crash-land on an island they would not  face with the same challenges. This has an effect on the overall outcome of the story. The next similarity is the symbolism that the conch creates. The conch represents order, civilization, and society. Throughout the novel and the movie the shell loses its power as the boys become more savage and less civilized. The conch’s effectiveness continues to diminish right up until its end. Lastly, the navy officer rescues the boys in the same manner in both the book and movie. Ralph discovers the officer while attempting to escape from Jack and his tribe who are trying to kill him. This is an important event because the boys have an emotional moment when they realize all the experiences they live through while staying on the island. The similarities between Peter Brooks’s and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies are very significant and they are what makes the story have such a powerful effect on their audience.

  12. Conclusion • First thing you need to do is restate your thesis. Do not copy and paste it from your intro. Change the diction. • Finally, you want to leave the reader thinking. A good way of doing this is to relate your essay to today’s society.

  13. Conclusion • The similarities between the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding  and the movie produced by Peter Brooks are superior to the differences.William Golding tells a powerful story, and Peter Brooks captures it well on the movie screen. Many aspects of the film were kept the same such as the theme, plot, characters, and symbols. The differences in theses mediums do not affect the plot, as they are very insignificant. If the changes were more significant, the effect on the audience would have been much more pronounced.

  14. Summative Essay Directions Imperative information regarding your summative.

  15. Reminders • When you write an expository essay, you must discuss your interpretation of the novel.
