Tape Drive Testing

This test infrastructure for IBM 3592 Tape Drives includes functionality tests to check the set of commands available on the SCSI standard, mechanical tests to assess the reliability of the robot, drive, and media, and performance tests to measure read and write speed and verify data integrity.

  1. Tape Drive Testing

  2. IBM 3592 tape drive Maximum native data rate of 40 MB/s 60GB and 300 GB IBM 3592 cartridge 8 meters/s high-speed search Compatible with IBM tape library and STK tape library (powderhorn) 1Gps/2Gps fibre channel connection 3592 tape drive 3584 library

  3. Tape Server IBM 3584 Tape Library Test infrastructure Fiber Qlogic Fiber Channel Bus Adapter IBM 3592 Tape Drive

  4. Functionality tests Go through the set of commands available on the SCSI standard Check returned information, timing, command acceptance Test the most important/used commands - load display, status, rewind, write, write file mark, rewind, read, space, load, unload, erase, locate, request sense But also test less important/used commands - test unit ready, write buffer, send diagnostic, mode select, mode sense, readblock, log select, log sense, inquiry, read buffer, release unit, report density support, reserve unit

  5. Functionality tests use fibre channel analyzer for verifying SCSI commands 1) use IBM tape driver and IBM test utility (interactive/command line) 2) use Linux tape driver and CERN test utility (interactive/command line)

  6. Mechanical tests Test mechanical reliability of robot / drive / media - Perform mount/check label/dismount cycles on selected tapes and drives Test mechanical reliability of drive / media - Perform random file reads on selected tapes and drives.

  7. Performance tests Read and write to tape Use UNIX command dd Different amount of data, different block size, different compression rate Verify integrity of data transferred with checksum Kernel 2.4 and kernel 2.6 (improved version of kernel I/O scheduler)

  8. Castor tests and • Castor rtcopy test suite … OK Functionality + Mechanical + Performance … OK Castor Production
