  1. The Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Strategy

The Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Strategy was created in 1995 to provide information, programs and services to urban and rural (off-reserve) Aboriginal people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS • Aboriginal people is inclusive of people with Native ancestry (status and non-status “Indian”), Metis and and the Inuit. • Oahas will also assist those living “on-reserve” and will do so when invited by community or individuals • Oahas is a RESOURCE available to non-Aboriginal agencies (Public Health, ASO’s, etc.). We are available to work in PARTNERSHIP in promoting HIV/AIDS programs available in your agencies.

Oahas Staff • Executive Director – Jonathon Potskin • Program Manager – Terrance Sands • Women’s Community Development Co-ordinator (WHAI) (Northern Ontario) – To Be Announced • Women’s Outreach Worker – Wanda Whitebird • HIV/IDU Project Co-Ordinator(GTA) – Denise Baldwin • Regional Outreach/Support Workers - 10 Workers in 8 sites (Cochrane, Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Toronto, Kingston, Windsor, Ottawa, and Hamilton)

Regional Outreach/Support Service Workers • Provide training, workshops, and information sessions (HIV/AIDS, health promotion, healthy sexuality, harm reduction, agency training (Aboriginal awareness and cultural-readiness) • Pre and post test counselling, education and support • Assistance in accessing traditional medicines and cultural supports • Education and visits to Provincial and Federal Correctional Institutions in Ontario • Supportive counselling, education and referrals • Harm reduction equipment distribution in designated communities
