  2. Objectives Students will: • Identify conjunctions. • Choose the appropriate conjunctions: and, but, or. • Complete sentences that contain conjunctions.

  3. What is a conjunction? A conjunction is a word that connects other words or groups in a sentence. Conjunctions can connect two subjects, two predicates, or two sentences. Gulls and puffins are sea birds. Gulls soar, and puffins swim gracefully.

  4. Conjunctions There are three conjunctions: • and, but, or. The conjunction “and” joins together. • Swans and penguins swim. • Boys and girls are smart.

  5. Conjunctions The conjunction “or” shows choices. • Penguins slide or waddle. • You can eat or read. The conjunction “but” shows contrast. • Swans live on ponds, but penguins do not. • Shelly likes to read, but her sister doesn’t.

  6. Conjunctions can also connect other words in a sentence. Sam walked quickly but quietly. He looked on a cliff and near the shore. He did not see any puffins or gulls.

  7. Underline the conjunctions in the following sentences. Parrots live in wild places or in zoos. Their beaks and feet are good for climbing. Tame parrots are friendly and loyal to their owners. Most parrots live in jungles, but some live in grasslands. They eat seed and drink at water holes.

  8. Add the correct conjunction. and This bird appears fierce, proud, _____ courageous. (joins together) The eagle has inspired Roman warriors, Russian emperors _____ and United States presidents.   9. Underline the conjunctions in the following paragraph. Hummingbirds are small and colorful. Their legs are weak, but their wings are strong. The wings beat fast and make a humming sound. The birds can fly up or down, backwards or sideways. They can hang in the air and drink from a flower. They usually lay two eggs, and the babies are featherless. Grass, bark, or cobwebs hold the nest together.
