  1. European Intelligent Transportation Systems Market B026-18 Published Feb. 2002

  2. Why do we need ITS? There are 175 million cars on the roads in Western Europe, leading to…. ….congestion ….pollution ….road accidents … businesses losing money … green-belts being destroyed …. driver stress

  3. What is ITS? • The aim of Intelligent Transportation Services (ITS) is to optimise the efficiency of the existing transportation infrastructure, in preference to building new roads. • With ITS governments and local authorities can monitor traffic, manage it and inform the public of the traffic issues facing them on the roads. • The rise of the ITS industry has come about primarily through the desire to reduce congestion, enhance the environment and improve road safety.

  4. Different ITS Technologies: Electronic Toll Collection Generation 1: Toll Plaza Generation 2: Open Carriageway Generation 3: Vehicle Positioning System • roadside-vehicle communication • Pass through at normal speeds • roadside-vehicle communication • Slow to pass through • Global positioning satellite tracks the vehicle • Vehicles can move freely • Suitable for road user charging

  5. Different ITS Technologies: Advanced Traffic Management Systems Video Image Processing Vehicle Detection Licence Plate Recognition Urban Traffic Control Systems

  6. Different ITS Technologies: Traffic Information Systems Trafficmaster RDS-TMC Variable Message Signs • Radio or navigation system • Traffic flow data collected, processed & broadcast digitally • Signal is translated into the driver’s own language • Pertinent to route being travelled only. • 7500 infra-red sensors over 8000 miles of UK motorways/trunk roads • Real-time traffic info disseminated every 3 minutes via radio broadcasts • UK, Germany, France, Italy.

  7. ITS Value Chain Advanced Traffic Management Systems & Variable Message Signs RDS-TMC & Trafficmaster Electronic Toll Collection Component Suppliers Equipment Suppliers Integrators Vehicle Manufacturers GeneralPublic Local/National Governments Highway Operators

  8. Key Findings • Market is expected to double from about E1bn in 2000 to 2.15 bn by 2006 • ETC and TIS product segments are expected to show the maximum growth, upto 45% p.a. • Competitive structure is regional and highly fragmented • Regional markets are dependent upon product type. For example Germany in 2000 was biggest market for ATMS but had zero sales for ETC • Market presents significant opportunities
