  2. Key Dates • Monday, December 11 request for proposals sent out via broadcast email • Friday, March 16 deadline for completed proposals in all categories • Tuesday, April 17 award announcements after proposal review by external selection committee

  3. Three Categories of Phase II Partnership • New Research Partner grants • To create and pilot intervention strategies and to evaluate the effect of these upon PhD completion rates and attrition patters • Continuation grants • To enhance and expand intervention and assessment activities begun under Phase I (2004-2007) • Data-only grants • To assess doctoral degree completion and attrition through the collection, submission, and analysis of data

Eligibility and Award Amounts • New Research Partner grants (5 x $80k) • CGS member universities that did not receive Phase I grants • Continuation grants (approx. 22 x $50k) • Active participants of Phase I (“Research & Project Partners”) • Data-only grants (5 x $15k) • All CGS member universities who meet selection criteria and requirements

  5. Selection Criteria • Priority Considerations: • Scope of Ph.D. enterprise in the supported fields (Esp. women in STEM fields and underrepresented minorities in all) • Record of effecting change • Quality of proposed interventions • Evidence of department faculty and institutional commitment to sustained project activity and evaluation beyond the three-year period

  6. Requirements for All Proposals • Graduate Dean must be PI • Demonstrate senior administrative endorsement from president or CAO AND faculty commitment for participating programs • Define the doctoral attrition problem(s) for students, particularly minorities and women, that each program is seeking to address and interventions that will be tried • Demonstrate the capacity to collect completion and attrition data

  7. Requirements • Submit completion and attrition data for min. of 5 STEM and 3 social science/humanities programs (ALL) • Program level • Demographic completion by broad field • Administer exit surveys for completers and non-completers (N,C, optional for D) • Submit with proposal completed factor assessments (N, C*, optional for D) • Conduct ongoing project assessment (N,C, optional for D)

  8. Commitments • Collect data on entering cohort of students by field, race/ethnicity, citizenship/residency, and gender and submit these data (aggregated by broad field) to CGS for a three-year period (ALL) • Develop institutionally consistent policies on tracking of stop-out, transfer-out, and change in degree objective (ALL)

  9. Additional Requirements • Propose a plan for implementing evidence-based midcourse corrections, changes, enhancements (C) • Set targets for Ph.D. completion based on institutional research (N) • Convene graduate dean (PI), project staff and faculty from each participating program at least once annually to discuss data and strategies for optimizing completion (N, C, optional for D) • Host a site visit (N and C)

  10. Reporting Requirements • Annual Written Reports on ongoing evaluations (N, C) and outcomes of dat collection (D) beginning in December 2007 • Oral presentations at CGS annual meetings, summer workshops, and project conference (N, C, optional for D)
