Carbon Emissions: • Greenhouse Gases – are primarily Carbon Dioxide, and are measurements used in Climate Change studies. • Carbon dioxide is produced by generating electricity, largely from burning fossil fuels. • Carbon dioxide is present in vehicle exhaust emissions.
CARBON EMISSIONS SOURCES • Buildings – homes, schools and offices that we live and work in everyday equal 70% of all emissions • Transportation and Vehicles we travel in cars, buses, trucks, trains contribute to 30% of all emissions
CARBON FOOTPRINT • TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE – • Calculate your carbon footprint – determine how much Carbon Dioxide you contribute: (measured in pounds and tons) On-Line Calculators: • www.epa.gov/cleanenergy • www.green.msn.com
NYSERDA ENERGY AUDIT & CALCULATION OF CARBON FOOTPRINT • Town Hall • Highway Complex • Transfer Station • Public Safety • Senior Center
TOWN CARBON FOOTPRINT:2654 Tons carbon dioxide annually FROM: • Five Buildings • 44 light duty trucks • 45 heavy duty trucks • 51 Pieces of Highway & Maintenance Equipment • 6 Passenger Vehicles
AUDIT Recommendations: Cost Savings & Energy Conservation Measures • COST = $86,000 • ANNUAL SAVINGS = $18,711 • IMPROVEMENT PAYBACK in 5 YEARS OR LESS • ANNUAL CARBON DIOXIDE OUTPUT REDUCED BY • 54 tons/year
ENERGY SAVING MEASURES • Vending Machine “MISER” Cost - $179.00 Annual Electricity Savings - $192.00 • Hot Water Heater “Timer” • Cost - $285.00 • Annual electricity Savings - $409.00
CARBON OFFSETTING ACTIVITIES • Increased Recycling efforts & availability • Green Building Design – LEED Standards • Tree Planting Programs • Encourage use of Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs – CFLs • Special Events and Educational Outreach • Partnerships with Community Groups & Schools and Library • G.R.E.E.N.
