Interprofessional Education: • “…occurs when two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care…and includes learning in academic and work-based settings before and after qualification, adopting and inclusive view of professional.” --- UK Center for Advancement of Interprofessional Education, CAIPE, 2006

  4. What is NaHSSA? Established in January of 2005, is the first national interprofessional student association in the world! Established to act as a unifying body to represent and advocate for interprofessional change A network of local university and college-based chapters and students that promote interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice Enables students to advocate for and learn about IPE through professional development and social networking opportunities Currently 20 university-based chapters across Canada Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X77tGTHQZOY

What is MaHSSA? • Established in January of 2007, we are comprised of 12 health sciences programs and faculties at the University of Manitoba • We are committed to the promotion of communication and collaboration early in training and throughout lifelong learning • Serve as the umbrella organization to house student-led IPE initiatives at the University of Manitoba

  6. Why is the Manitoba chapter important? SOLUTION….MaHSSA • An body needed to promote and advocate for IPE in the province of Manitoba • An umbrella organization to house IPE initiatives and programs • A body to provide professional development and social networking opportunities for students in the health sciences • A body that strives to promote an environment of trust, acceptance and understanding of health disciplines’ training, scope and expertise with an emphasis on the importance of patient-centered care, patient safety and quality improvement FACTS: • Interprofessional Education (IPE) should begin in pre-professional years • It is known that IPE shapes collaborative practice and improves quality of care • Separate curricula at the U of M emphasized a team-based approach, however, minimal contact between the programs • IPE eqiups students with the tools necessary to provide team-based care within healthcare settings

  7. Our Mission • To act as the unifying body that enhances holistic care by promoting interprofessional education and facilitating collaboration between the health services students of Manitoba.

  8. Our Vision • To achieve a standard of interprofessional practice by providing interprofessional opportunities across curricula and human service initiatives.

Initiatives • WHO Checklist Project • Medical and nursing students placed in interprofessional pairs • Observed OR safety practices in WRHA hospitals • Data collected regarding medical education outcomes and current OR practices • Report presented to WRHA in early 2010 Haynes et al. A Surgical Checklist to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality in a Global Population. N Engl J Med 22009; 360:491-499

  16. Nightmare Nightcare • Medical and nursing students will work together over the course of one 12 hour night shift in the Nursing Simulation Labs • Students will work together to treat mock “patients” with a variety of disease scenarios in a simulated ward

  17. Advocacy • To be actively engaged within various faculties to advocate for interprofessionalpatient safety education • Liaise with IPE office to coordinate educational programming and activities across the health sciences disciplines

  18. Future and Ongoing plans • Open Schools Sessions • Interprofessional case-based learning in clinical simulation labs • Ongoing advocacy for inclusion of open school certification as a part of faculty curricula

Where can faculty help? • Serve as a faculty champion • Work with MaHSSA and its student initiatives in ensuring that IPE is a cornerstone in future curriculum planning • Provide support for professional development, social and current and future MaHSSA programs and initiatives • Happy to connect you with student champions in your respective faculty • Stay tuned…

The Future… • Continue to create awareness!!! • Amongst existing and incoming students in the respective health human sciences programs • Continue to establish good communication and relations with current IPE initiatives (WISH, IHI) • Build on existing and establish IP link to program student councils • Professional development & social events • HCTC
