  1. Proposal to create theMetrics Implementation Group (MIG) Alistair Mills OCC, CERN alistair.mills@cern.ch project-eu-egee-sa1-mig@cern.ch 12 June 2007

  2. Remarks about how we do things Groups working on things should not be left on their own. For example: • GGUS has the ESC • CIC has the COD meetings • GOCDB has its advisory group • SAM has something? However: • ROCs get little help with deliverables/ milestones • OCC gets little help with quarterly reports • OCC gets little help with EU reviews • The plan for the deliverables/ milestones misses coordination Result: • deliverables are not as useful as they could be • things are done at the last minute • the information which is required for a document is not readily available • often quite stressful for the individuals concerned Partial solution - the working group: • APG was created to provide support for accounting • MIG is proposed to provide support for metrics work A word of caution: • The group is not there to create pressure • Participation in the group should be active SA1 - ARM-10 – Stockholm, 12 June 2007, MIG

  3. Related work MSA1.1 - Defines the set of metrics for SA1 and the quarterly reporting requirements APG - Accounting Portal Group - Started December 2006: • This is satisfactory • Extend the mandate of this group and put its work on the agenda for a future ARM QAG - Quality Assurance Group: • This group meets monthly and guides the work of JRA2 • Alistair attends these meetings (Pawel is deputy) • SA1 is getting some time from Etienne Urbah to work on the MIG DSA1.4 - Production Infrastructure Assessment - 1 - March 2007: • This was an important deliverable • Its readiness was affected by data not being readily available • There were commitments made in the deliverable to improvements coming in DSA1.7 DSA1.7 - Production Infrastructure Assessment - 2 - February 2008: • One of the two main reasons for the MIG is to support this deliverable QR - Quarterly reports: • The other main reason for the MIG is to meet the quarterly reporting requirement of MSA1.1 Service level agreement group, Monitoring group, CIC portal group SA1 - ARM-10 – Stockholm, 12 June 2007, MIG

  4. MSA1.1 – Activity Metrics Defined This deliverable provides a list of metrics for SA1 in five groups: https://edms.cern.ch/document/723928 • Size metrics - 8 items • Operations metrics - 5 items • Usage metrics - 5 items • user support metrics - 8 items • service metrics - 12 items Not all metrics are required for the quarterly report The milestone makes no commitment to implementation Good work done by Maite in April 2006 SA1 - ARM-10 – Stockholm, 12 June 2007, MIG

  5. Prototype of quarterly metrics • In November 2006, I wrote a note to collect together my ideas about how we could make the measurements. http://egee-docs.web.cern.ch/egee-docs/mig/pdf/Prototype_of_metrics_quarterly_report_137_08.pdf • At that time, the only metric which did not have a measurement was file transfer. This has now been implemented by GridView • Since Q03, quarterly report contains a set of pointers to metric sources • The source of the metrics include: • Gstat • Gridview • SAM • GridIce • GOC-DB • CESGA • APEL • GGUS • Some scripts SA1 - ARM-10 – Stockholm, 12 June 2007, MIG

  6. Useful URLs for this work • Web site for the MIG http://egee-docs.web.cern.ch/egee-docs/list.php?dir=./mig • Mission statement http://egee-docs.web.cern.ch/egee-docs/mig/mig_mission_164_01.txt • Set of meetings http://egee-docs.web.cern.ch/egee-docs/list.php?dir=./mig/meetings • Test implementation http://egee-docs.web.cern.ch/egee-docs/list.php?dir=./mig/test_implementation SA1 - ARM-10 – Stockholm, 12 June 2007, MIG

  7. Progress so far • Got the support of Ian Bird for this work • Etienne is working on this, 40% of his time • Alistair is working on this, 10% of his time • Obtained a commitment for help from ROC-NE • Test implementation of the size metrics part • Container available for the other four parts • Schedule of meetings for June/ July/ August • Mailing list • Expect to be able to use this for QR06 (October 07) • Report at EGEE07 SA1 - ARM-10 – Stockholm, 12 June 2007, MIG
