  1. Intermediate Information about the Four New Testament Gospels (Lesson 2) • Which NT Gospel contains the Parable of the Good Samaritan? (Matthew; Mark; Luke; or John) • Click for the next slide and the answer.

  2. Which NT Gospel contains the Parable of the Good Samaritan? (Matthew; Mark; Luke; or John) Answer: • Luke 10:29-37, which begins:29: But the lawyer wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (continue clicking for excerpts from the Good Samaritan) • 30: In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. • 31: A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.32: So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

  3. Luke’s Parable of the Good Samaritan continued (1) • 33: But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. • 34: He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. • 35: The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

  4. Luke’s Parable of the Good Samaritan continued (2) • 36: Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” • 37: He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” • Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

  5. Which NT Gospel contains the Raising of Lazarus? (Matthew; Mark; Luke; or John) Answer: • John 11:1-44 , which begins: 1: Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (continue clicking for excerpts from the Lazarus story) • 3: So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” • 4: But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

  6. John’s Raising of Lazarus continued • 41: So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me.” • 43: When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” • 44: The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

  7. Which NT Gospel contains Jesus’ Healing of Ten Lepers? (Matthew; Mark; Luke; or John) Answer: • Luke 17:12-19, which begins: 12: As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, 13: they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” (continue clicking for excerpts from the Ten Lepers) • 14: When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. • 15: Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.

  8. Luke’s Healing of the Ten Lepers continued • 16: He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. • 17: Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18: Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” • 19: Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

  9. Which NT Gospel contains the Parable of the Prodigal Son? (Matthew; Mark; Luke; or John) Answer: • Luke 15:11-32 , which begins: 11: Then Jesus said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12:The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.’ (continue clicking for excerpts from the Prodigal Son) • So he divided his property between them. 13: A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. • 18: I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; 19: I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.’

  10. Luke’s Parable of the Prodigal Son continued • 20: So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. • 25: Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing… 28: Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. • 31: Then the father said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32: But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.’”

  11. Which NT Gospel contains the Wedding at Cana, where Jesus changes water to wine? (Matthew; Mark; Luke; or John) Answer: • John 2:1-11, which begins: 1: On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. (continue clicking for excerpts from the Wedding at Cana) • 3: When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” • 7: Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

  12. John’s Wedding at Cana continued • 8: He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. • 9: When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew) • 11: Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

  13. Great Work! In this lesson we have learned: Luke 10:19-37 contains the Parable of the Good Samaritan. John 11:1-44 contains Jesus’ Raising of Lazarus from the dead. Luke 17:12-19 contains Jesus’ Healing of Ten Lepers, in which only the healed Samaritan leper returns to thank Jesus.

  14. Summary continued • Luke 15:11-32 contains the Parable of the Prodigal Son. • John 2:1-11 contains the Wedding at Cana where Jesus changes water into wine, which is the first “sign” Jesus performs in John’s Gospel and provides the occasion for the disciples to believe.
