  2. How can we achieve optimum health? • 4 simple steps… • 1. KNOWLEDGE: acquire and collect information • 2. EXAMINE: look at your own behavior • 3. GOALS: set personal goals • 4. DECIDE: make responsible decisions

  3. SO…LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE • DECISION MAKING PROCESS • Think of your past year. Can you think of a time when you did not make the best decision?

  4. Good Decisions Are Ethical and Effective • A decision is effective if it accomplishes intended and desirable objectives without causing unintended and undesirable results. • A decision is ethical if it demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to core ethical values (the Six Pillars of Character).

  5. The Decision Making Model • A series of steps you apply to situation to help make a responsible decision. • 5 steps

  6. STEP 1… • IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM • Clearly identify the situation. • Ask yourself: what decision do I need to make? • Who is involved? • Am I feeling pressure to make a decision? • How much time do I have to decide?

  7. Step 2… • LIST THE OPTIONS • What are all the possible choices you could make? • Usually there is more than one option. • Remember that sometimes it is appropriate NOT to take action. • Share your opinions with trusted friends/adults/peers. Ask for their advice.

  8. Step 3… • WEIGH OUTCOMES/ CONSIDER VALUES • Apply criteria when assessing what to do… a. Would the results of my decision be helpful? b. is the decision safe? c. is the decision legal? d. will the results be respectful to myself and others? e. how is this going to affect others? Ie. Parents/ guardians

  9. Step 4… • MAKE THE DECISION AND ACT ON IT Use everything you know at this point and make a responsible decision. You can feel good that you have CAREFULLY thought about the situation and your options.

  10. Step 5… • EVALUATE YOUR DECISION • Reflection • What was the outcome? + or -? • What did you learn? • How did your decision affect your health and the health of those around you? • Would you change your decision in the future?

Fun Time… woohoo… DECISION MAKING SITUATIONS (the teenage version) • Find a partner of the opposite sex • Read the scenario • Within the given time come up with a sound decision • Discuss the options • Record all information on sheets provided • Be ready to discuss your decisions • Hand in at end of class.

  12. Problem #1 • You are invited to what you think is a birthday party. You decide to go and it seems to be a pretty average party scene. Eventually, a friend asks if you want to take a walk with some others. You agree. When outside, they light up some WEED. They pressure you to take a hit. You have never smoked before. • What do you do?

  13. Problem #2 • You decide to go to a Providence Place Mall with some peeps. There are so many GREAT buys. You do not have as much $$ as your friends so, you just buy something small. Your friends on the other hand have $$$$ and are able to spend, spend, spend. After your friends listen to your tale of woe they encourage you to stuff an item under your coat. • What do you do?

  14. Problem #3 • T here is a sleepover with 4 of your friends. An older brother bought a case of beer for all of you. You all get pretty drunk but are still planning to go to the Homecoming football game the next afternoon. At the game, one of your friends is not feeling too well…HANGOVER!! They end up puking behind the bleachers. The rest of the group rush to drag that friend to a hidden spot and pretend that everything is OK. You are worried about your friend but the rest of the group say to stay away and pretend you know NOTHING! • What do you do?

  15. Problem #4 • You have P.E. last period on a gorgeous 80 degree Friday afternoon. The class activities for the day are flag football and fitness walking. Your friend says, “let’s tell Mrs. Harvey we’re fitness walking, go to the bathroom and then go to Goddard.” • (that’s where all the COOL kids go ) • What do you do?

  16. Problem #5 • Recently, you have bombed several tests in one class. You believe the teacher stinks and also hates you. It’s now the last 3 weeks of the semester and the “D” that is on the way will be less than exciting for your parental units. What should you do?

  17. Problem #6 • Everyone in your social group has a steady dating interest. You DON’T and are feeling pretty down. You have tried your best to look better (ie. clothes/hair/weight) At a party, you would do anything for some attention. A partygoer offers you a drink and invites you upstairs to a bedroom “to talk”. What do you do?

  18. Problem #7 • You are hanging with some friends( Bill and Tom), driving around on a Saturday night and are looking for something to do. Tom stops at his house to pick up some beer for the road. He gets back into the car and hands the 6 pack to Bill. Bill immediately cracks a beer open and tosses the rest in the backseat. The music is cranking (the latest tunes from your favorite PE CD on the radio).You are all singing along and Tom drives through a stop sign. UH OH here comes the EGPD! • What do you all do?

  19. Problem #8 • You are hosting the biggest high school party of the year. Your parents have gone away for the weekend. Your older sibling bought more than enough alcohol, and your best friend invited all your group of friends. Everything is going well at first but eventually you becomes aware of a few problems… • Party has grown to over 100 people • People puking in bad places • People are “getting friendly” in various places • The neighbors have threatened to call the police due to the noise. • Your parents have called and decided to come home early • (2 hours) • WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?????
