  2. What if God was one of us? • He was one of us! • We ask: • How did he live? • What were his experiences? • We discover: • How we should live. • What our experiences will be like. • This week: He sends a guide – the Holy Spirit!

The “Procession” Debate • 15:26 “When the Advocate comes, who I will send to you from the Father – the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father – he will testify about me.” • Holy Spirit proceeds from Father OR • Holy Spirit proceeds from Father and Son • Debate about the nature of God, how God functions  Lead to Great Schism in 1054 – Eastern Orthodox & Western (now: Catholics + Protestants) Churches • Text is not about how God functions • Text shows us the unity of Father, Son & Spirit

Mission & Work of Holy Spirit • Holy Spirit guides us into Truth (15:26, 16:13a, 14) • Jesus is the Truth • Holy Spirit always points us back to God • Holy Spirit convicts of sin (16:8-11) • We are guilty of sin • Our understanding of righteousness is wrong • Our judgments are mistaken • Holy Spirit guides our understanding (16:13c) • 16:3c “he [the Spirit] will tell you what is yet to come” • Does NOT mean that the Spirit is a fortune teller! • Holy Spirit helped disciples understand the significance of Jesus’ coming death and resurrection • Holy Spirit helps us understand everything in light of the gospel

Holy Spirit comforts us • Does NOT mean that he makes us materially comfortable • recall John 14:25-27 “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give… as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” • Holy Spirit brings us peace / shalom in a hurting & broken world

And we must also testify to it!
