  2. Pink’d History • This fundraiser has been conducted by Broad Run High School’s nonprofit organization, DECA. It began when a mother of Broad Run students was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The community came together to host a football game in which the primary goal was to raise money for for the cause. All proceeds from the game went to Loudoun Breast Health Network. They raised thousands of dollars in their first year and the fundraiser has grown each year since. This event is put on by a business club, so each year 3 different students are put in charge to host and advertise this event. The name has changed yearly, beginning as the Pink Effect, to its most recent name, Pink’d.

  3. Pink’d • Primary Goal: Raise money for breast cancer • Secondary Goal: Raise awareness • Third Goal: Teach business students how to successfully host, and market an event using public relations and business tactics.

  4. Pink’d & Me • As a freshman and sophomore in high school, I always attended the events and even volunteered to pass out pink necklaces and helped spread the word. Later on, one of my good friends lost her mother after a seven year battle to breast cancer. Our entire group of friends took it upon ourselves to help the DECA group in charge of that year’s game. It was called “Got Pink?,” a knockoff of “Got Milk?.” People who donated got to take a picture with their “Got Pink?” shirt and a hot pink mustache, similar to Milk. We also held bake sales, a pep rally, a tailgate, and many other fun events to promote pink. We donated about $7,000 to Loudoun Breast Health Network last year. This is the type of program that I hope to be a part of for my entire life.

  6. Pink’d Continues • This year, although I have graduated, the Pink game has had a big effect on me. It got more publicity and raised more money than it ever has before, and it actually influenced my decision on declaring marketing as my major. I have participated in, and watched this event grow from a high school game to a nationally known fundraiser. The methods to making this happen all came from the marketing classes and marketing program I participated in throughout high school. Not only this, but the money goes to a good cause that helps other people. This year Pink got on the Today Show in New York City, local radio stations, the Washington Post, and had a visit from Redskins Quarterback, RGIII. They nearly doubled the amount of money raised, simply with the use of social networking.
