  1. Sewing Tools

  2. Needle(s) • Has an eye or hole at one end the other end is sharp • Pulls thread through the fabric • Sewing Needle used for hand sewing and machine needle is used or sewing machine sewing. • A person uses one at a time.

  3. Pins • Have a handle at one end and a sharp point at the other end • Used to hold pieces to fabric together • A Person uses MORE THAN ONE AT A TIME

  4. Scissors • Scissors can be bigger or smaller • Smaller ones are used to cut threads. • Lager ones for fabric • Usually smaller than shears • There is no left or right handed scissors – the handles are the same size for both sides.

  5. Seam Ripper • Used to remove stitches when you want to take something apart • Used to remove stitches when you make a mistake

  6. Shears – Left/Right Handed • Used to cut fabric and thread – never used to cut paper – dulls shears • They have two different sized finger holes.

  7. Pin Cushion • A pin cushion is the storage place for pins and needles • The emery bag contains a mineral substance used to sharpen the points of pins and needles

  8. Ironing Board • Covered in heat resistant cover to prevent burning • Firm surface to iron on

  9. Iron Electric appliance that produces heat and steam to remove wrinkles from clothes

  10. Thimble Metal or plastic “cap” to protect fingers when hand sewing

  11. Measuring TapeSeam Gauge Measuring Tape – measures longer or larger objects. Seam Gauge – used to measure small distances over and over and over like when you sew a seam and have to keep checking if you are sewing the same distance

  12. Bobbin Small spool that holds thread in the bottom of a sewing machine

  13. Embroidery Hoop Wooden or plastic circle that is used to hold your fabric tight so that hand stitches can be completed easier

  14. Embroidery Floss A special thread used for decorative stitches on your projects. Usually 6 strands thick and we split it into 3/3

  15. Thread • Permanently sewing two pieces of fabric together • By hand • Or with machine
