  1. Young PlaywrightsFestival Write-A-Play

  2. Setting Where your play takes place. House Yard Outer Space Swamp Inside a desk

  3. Use your imagination… • A setting can be anywhere. Your play could take place in the White House, a rainforest, in school, in your shoe, or on a distant planet. • It could be somewhere you know really well: like in your bedroom or in your kitchen. • Where will your play be set?

  4. Begin your play. • Take out a piece of paper, and a pencil. • Put your name at the top of the page. • Write down your ideas for the setting of your play.

  5. Characters The “who” in your play. People A boy or girl? A man or woman? Animals A real animal? An imaginary animal? Objects A toy? A pencil? A box? A desk?

  6. Use your imagination • Characters can be people, animals or objects. You could write about two frogs on a lily pad or a lost pencil in a pencil box. A character could even be based on someone you know, like a friend, a famous person, or a historical figure. • Who will your main character be?

  7. Who is your main character? • Write down your idea for the main character in your play. • Now, it’s time to add some details.

  8. Character Details • What is your character’s name? • What do they look like? • How do they get along with others? • How are they feeling today? • What do they like to do?

  9. What is your play about? • Now, let’s find out what your play is about. • Why is today important in the life of your main character?

  10. The “Big Want” • What does your main character want? • What is keeping them from getting it? • Wanting to win the spelling bee? • Wanting to have a friend? • Wanting to get away from a space alien? • Wanting to create a masterpiece? • What is your main character’s Big Want?

  11. Write it down! Now that you know your setting, your main character, and the “Big Want”, it’s time to write your play. Ask yourself, “when does the story begin?”…and Write it down. Then keep asking, “What happens next?” Write it down!

  12. The Beginning • As you are writing, keep in mind that you want to have a beginning part. In the beginning you will introduce your main character and the “Big Want”.

  13. The Middle • Use the middle part of your play to describe what happens as your main character tries to get what he or she wants.

  14. Ending your play • Use the ending of your play to let the audience know if your main character was able to get their “Big Want”.

  15. Rewrite, edit, revise Once you have finished writing your play the first time, you may want to rewrite it. As you rewrite, you can make any changes you’d like to make.

  16. Send us your play. • We want you to send your finished play to Florida Studio Theatre’s Young Playwright Festival. • Each play we receive will be read at least two times. • If your play is selected, it will be put on stage at Florida Studio Theatre.
