  2. Introduction • Cats are popular pets in the U.S and around the world • In the old times, cats were used to kill rodents, and other small pests

  3. Fur • The first thing you will notice looking at a Cat is its unique fur coat • The fur on a cat protects them from the elements, it keeps them warm, helps regulate body temperature, and sometimes acts as a camouflage in nature. • Cats groom regularly, with their sandpaper tougue and they use the tongue to clean themselves, allow new fur to grow, and protect their skin.

  4. Eyes/ Sight • One of the cat’s most striking features is unusually large eyes that seem to glow in the dark. • Cats have relatively similar eye structures to humans such as the retina and lens, however they have a structure called light sensitive cells called TapetumLucidum, which in Latin means bright carpet. • It allows the cat to take in extra light in dim situations. It acts like a mirror reflecting the light that was not absorbed the first time it pasted through the Retina. This results in the glowing eyes you see when the light strikes the cat in a dark room. • Cats aren’t color blind, they can distinguish colors as proven in other tests

  5. Hearing • Cats can hear very well. • They can detedct sounds at 65 kilohertz (kHz) which is better than a dog and much better than any human • The ears have a flap called a pinna which allows them to move in any direction to determine the source of a noise, with a high degree of accuracy. • Cats even detect sounds in their sleep

  6. Legs • Cats can fall and almost always land on their feet • There are two organs that help the cat land safely: their eyes that allow them to position themselves; and the Vestibular Apparatus located in the inner ear which controls balance and orientation. • Cats land properly by righting its head, then will rotate its front part of the body one hundred eighty degrees. Then the cat rotates the rear half of its body and flattens itself out to spread the area of impact, and their tail acts as a counter balance.

  7. Tail • Cats use their tails in many situations such as walking, falling and to show emotion. • A cat uses its tail in the following ways to show emotion: Cats wave their tale to show excitement. Happy cats wave their tail slowly, while an angry cat will wave their tail quickly and aggressively. When a cat is scared, they will fluff up their tail to make themselves look more intimidating to their opponent.

  8. Maine Coon • The oldest and largest breed of cat in America is the Maine Coon. • It draws its name from a similar coat appearance and hunting habits as raccoons. These cats were brought to Maine by traders and sailors from Europe in the early 1800’s. • The Maine Coon has a shaggy, thick, and long coat which probably developed because of the climate in New England. The fur is shorter on the shoulders in front than in the back.

  9. Maine Coons (cont.) • The feet are large and round and the pads will always match the color of the cat’s coat. • Their tail is usually the length of their body and has a plume like end. Maine Coons are one of the largest cats weighing between eight and eighteen pounds. • Their head is fairly large, but small in comparison to the body. • Most Maine Coons have large set apart eyes and which only come in green, gold and copper.

  10. Maine Coon (cont.) • Maine Coons can come in a variety of colors but the most traditional is the brown tabby, which resembles the raccoon. • One reason for the Maine Coon’s popularity is its delightful attitude they are affectionate and loving cats and are often called gentle giants.
