Empowering Parents of Down Syndrome Children through Professional Training

This project aimed to provide professional training to parents of children with Down Syndrome, addressing the lack of opportunities and prejudices they face. The project included resources for various age groups and fields of study, fostering support and guidance for families. Implemented by multiple organizations, it resulted in educational materials in several languages and formats.

Leonardo da VinciInnovation Projects - European Priorities • Why the project was necessary?(needs addressed - problems solved): • Prejudices = opportunities for people with Down Syndrome (DS) to change and learn are extremely limited • Studies = early stimulation helps • Training tool = stimulate and educate people with Down Syndrome throughout their lives • Target groups: specialists, public, private institutions involved in educating persons with DS • Beneficiares: parents of people with DS

(process – implementation): • Analysis of needs (extended analysis of the training needs) • Fields of study: these categories were set following the main important fields of study in Down syndrome disability: Health, Socio-Affective, Education, Independence, Financial assistance, Social participation, Sexuality • Support to new parents with Down syndrome children. • Information about several fields in different age groups for Down syndrome children. • Facilitate conversations + guidance • Real testimonies from people + advices and opinions from experts from different countries.

(results with regard to European priority): • DVD = 15 videos + 1 introductory • CD • Digital book in: Spanish, Italian, Romanian and Greek +ENG + subtitles • Three age groups: • 0 to 6 years: Socio-affective, educational, health, autonomy and social participation. • 6 to 18 years: autonomy, educational, health, sexuality, social participation and socio-affective • Adulthood: employment, autonomy, health, sexuality and social participation
