  1. The Long Farewell: Typewriters as Objects of Nostalgia by: Suzanne Fischer Presentation by: Teresa Hernandez

  2. Nostalgia? Where? “Historians are not immune to nostalgia; in fact, we can be complicit in it. My instinctual reaction to seeing typewriters everywhere has been delight. As a historian who cares about objects, I'm pleased by this new appreciation for typewriter aesthetics…” Fischer believes typewriters are kept around to help society maintain a connection to a happier time period.

  3. Main Points Typewriters make society feel less “homesick” and more connected to the 1870s. Keychopping to make jewelry and to decorate old-tyme projects is still popular. Typewriters are used for specific tasks, therefore, there is no reason for there to be a shortage of typewriters anytime soon.

  4. A Type of Nostalgia by: William Pannapacker http://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/pannapacker.html Typewriters remind society of the safe jobs they created for women in the early 1930s. The use of typewriters equals resistance to technological advancement and attachment to the past.

  5. Any Questions? Is nostalgia the real reason as to why people keep typewriters around? Why do you think some people prefer to keep a broken typewriter asdécor rather than throw it out and upgrade to newer technology? What other pieces of technology are kept around due to nostalgia?
