  2. What is Child Abuse? • Child abuse is any form of physical, mental or emotional abuse that may cause physical or psychological harm to a child. • Who can be child abusers????

  3. Types of Child Abuse • Physical • An injury resulting from physical aggression. Even if it wasn’t intentional, it is still abuse. • Emotional • Sexual

  4. Physical Abuse • Beating, Slapping, Hitting • Pushing, Shaking, Kicking, Throwing • Pinching, Biting, Choking, Hair-pulling • Burning with cigarettes, Scalding with hot water or other hot objects • Severe Physical Punishment • Providing child with substances

  5. Shaken Baby Syndrome • Violently shaking a baby to get them to stop crying • Culver signed a law in 2009 to educate parents • Causes the baby’s fragile, undeveloped brain to hit against their skull, damaging that part of the brain • Can lead to: • Mental Retardation • Cerebral Palsy • Blindness

  6. Signs of Physical Abuse • Burns, Bite Marks, Bruises, Cuts or Welts that are shaped like objects • Resistance to going home • Fear of Adults

  7. Emotional Abuse • Behavior of a caregiver to the child that can negatively effect their psychological development • Ignoring • Rejecting • Isolation • Exploiting or Corrupting • Verbal Assault • Terrorizing • Neglect

  8. Signs of Emotional Abuse • Very difficult to identify and stop • Severe mood changes • Depression • Low self esteem, feeling worthless • Negative thoughts • Aggression

  9. Sexual Abuse • Fondling, Kissing or Touching a child in an inappropriate place or in an inappropriate way • Violation of Bodily Privacy • Exposing Children to Adult Sexuality • Commercial Exploitation

Signs of Sexual Abuse • Inappropriate interest or knowledge in sexual acts • Seductiveness • Avoidance of things related to sexuality or rejection of owns body or genitals • Over compliance or extreme aggression • Fear of a particular person or family member • Sudden depression or severe change in personality
