The Hydrocarbon Pool in Alcohol-to-Gasoline over HZSM-5 CatalystsSarah L. Hruby, Graduate student, Department of Chemical and Biological EngineeringAdvisor: Prof. Brent Shanks, Iowa State University MTG ETG • Technical accomplishments: • Operated a continuous flow, fixed bed reactor at elevated temperatures and pressures • Determined the composition of material retained within the pores of HZSM-5 catalysts used in the reaction of ethanol-to-gasoline and how the composition changes with time on stream Major breakthroughs: Demonstrated that although the product distribution is the same for ETG and MTG, the hydrocarbon pools differ. However, the presence of methanol was shown to suppress formation of the mixed ethyl/methyl benzenes present in ETG. • PIRE Activities: • PIRE Research Internship in Denmark • Attended CAMD Summer School • Other Efforts/Outreach: • Mentorship of an undergraduate student
