  2. Royce Hall History • Completed in 1929 • Modeled after a 12th century Italian Basilica • It was built in the Italian Romanesque Revival architectural style • Severely damaged by the 1994 Northridge earthquake

  3. Basilica • “The all- purpose great hall” • It had many functions • A model for the preeminent building type of European architecture • The basic spatial configurations have been reinterpreted for all manner of uses • The building was originally designed to be a meeting place for the campus

CONSERVATION • Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century • Preservation quickly turned into restoration • Repair over restoration • “show no pretence of other art and otherwise to resist all tampering with either the fabric or ornament of the building as it stands” • The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings • SPAB established a range of principles that are still widely followed • National Trust for Historic Preservation was founded in the U.S
