  1. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Poem Appreciation Speaker:

  2. I Shot an Arrow • A Psalm [sɑ:m]of Life

  3. I shot an arrow into the air,It fell to earth I knew not where; For so swiftly it flew the sightCould not follow it in its flight.I breathed a song into the air,It fell to earth I knew not where; For who has the sight so keen and strongThat can follow the flight of song. Long, long afterwards in an oak,I found the arrow still unbroke; And the song, from beginning to end,I found again in the heart of a friend.

  6. Analysis 1. It uses a traditional iambic(抑扬格)form with the feet “aabbaaccddee”; 2.It uses symbolism (象征手法) as the major method: the arrow and the song stand for friendship; 3.The last part makes the finishing point and foils the theme (点题).

  7. Conclusion In the poem, Longfellow sings friendship implicitly and skillfully. When he shot an arrow and breathed a song into the air, he did not expect to find them any more. But many years later, he came across with the arrow and found that his song was always in the heart of his friend. To conclude, friendship is everlasting and do not forget your long lost friend.

  8. What the Heart of the Young Man said to the Psalmist. Tell me not, in mournful numbers,  Life is but an empty dream!——For the soul is dead that slumbers,  And things are not what they seem.  Life is real! Life is earnest!  And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest,  Was not spoken of the soul.  Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,  Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each tomorrow. Find us farther than today.

  9. Art is long, and time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the world’s broad field of battle,  In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle!  Be a hero in the strife!  Trust no future, howe’er pleasant!  Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act——act in the living Present!  Heart within, and God o’er head!

  10. Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And,departing, leave behind us Footsteps on the sands of time; Footprints, that perhaps another,  Sailing o’er life’s solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,  Seeing, shall take heart again,  Let us, then, be up and doing,  With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing,  Learn to labor and to wait.

  14. Analysis 1. It uses alliteration as the main method; 2. It applies metaphor as an vital method; 3. The poet uses contrast to express the theme; 4. The poem is neatly rhymed. The rhyme scheme follows the pattern “ABAB, CDCD, EFEF...”.

  15. Analysis Origin: By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return. [Genesis 3:19 ]

  16. Conclusion 1.Longfellow has a deep and accurate insight of life. 2.It is a poem of encouragement, telling the readers not to waste life. 3.He believes that people should lead heroic and courageous lives instead of sitting idle and remaining ineffectual in the rapidly changed world. 4.We are encouraged to try our hardest tomake our life bright and accomplish as much as we can.
