  1. HWOC Socratic Seminar #1What Makes Me, ME? Integrating Lessons from AP-Human Geography, H Bio, & HWOC via text-based group discussion to investigate and formulate ideas for personal identity & self-actualization

GOALS Discussion goals: Create and delivering questions for critical thinking Use textual evidence to support ideas Analyze and determine deeper meanings of words Project-specific goals: Explore ideas presented in APHG, HWOC, HBIO to support a MELcon paragraph that investigates the impact of DNA and/or culture on our “personhood”

  3. WHAT IS A SOCRATIC SEMINAR? • Based on Socrates method for coming to one’s own truth or understanding via critical questioning. • Students conduct discussion based on a common or “essential” question or concern. Let’s watch…. • https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/teaching-the-n-word

  4. Materials for discussion • Socratic Seminar Note-taking form • Blue HG/BIO Forum packet (YOUR NOTES ) • “Harrison Bergeron” • Three higher-order discussion questions

  5. Discussion Protocol • “Two Before Me” (no one dominates) • No interruptions • Use “I” statements to set up objections/disagreements • Use transitions, affirmations and supporting statements • Stay on task/on topic

  6. Roles and Responsibilities for a Modified Socratic Seminar • Teacher facilitates the discussion, including timekeeping and protocol agency. • Students will have a turn discussing, coaching, and observing. • Students will take notes and complete reflections.

  7. Procedures for Discussion • Sit in concentric circles of 13 each, inside and outside. • Two “rounds” of discussion for a total of 40 minutes: •ROUND 1: 10 minutes of inside circle discussion; 3 minutes coaching from outside person; 5 minutes of closing. Inside chair “pushes out” to the outer circle, switching roles to start ROUND 2. stretch break •ROUND 2: 10 minutes of inside circle discussion; 3 minutes coaching from outside person; 5 minutes of closing.

  8. REFLECTION Students will write a reflection in three parts: 1. How did my discussion skills improve? Explain. 2. How did this seminar help prepare me to write my Melcon paragraph? Be specific. 3. What was the best part of participating in the Socratic Seminar? Details, please!

Closure… • TURN IN your assessment form and reflections today. • WRITE your Melcon paragraph, starting tonight! • Formulate your thesis/main idea/ “claim”. • Use the Melcon template or outline to PLAN your paragraph (argument) that explains how DNA(genetics) OR culture/environment = YOU! • TYPE your paragraph onto a googledoc and share it with Mrs. Kirby (can edit) for my feedback (due 11/4). • Revise your paragraph and then submit to Turnitin.comby 11/8.
