  2. 4-H Recognition Model • Purpose:encourage and support the efforts of young people in learning to improve their knowledge and develop their life skills

Theory behind the 4-H Recognition Model • Everyone needs to be recognized • Positive recognition brings about positive behaviors & attitudes • Recognition is a process not an event • Adults and youth change over time so recognition needs to change also. • Recognition is varied to meet varied personalities • Youth become active in 4-H because they benefit personally not because it is a good program

Recognition of… • Participation: involvement is the first step towards building positive self concept • Something everyone can achieve • Reflects the type of activity • Camp, Service Projects, Club meetings, etc. • Is given at activity • Needs to be valued by participant • Possible Examples: • Inexpensive items such as certificates, pins, t-shirts, caps.

Recognition of… • Progress towards personal goals: gain experience in goal setting & realistic self-assessment • Usually at club level - check progress often to make sure goals are realistic and reachable • Intrinsic • Internal, feeling good about accomplishment, self motivating • Extrinsic • Positive feedback, written notes, stickers chart • Evaluation – personally setting the goal, needs to own the goal and evaluate progress

Recognition of… • Standards of Excellence: gives youth an external pre-determined target for learning experiences • Evaluate performance, accomplishment, and quality of work to a Standard • Clearly defined standard • The standard is constant and participants rise to the standard • Everyone that reaches the standard should be recognized • Possible Examples: • ribbons, medals, stickers, premiums

Recognition of… • Peer competition: strong motivation for some, not appropriate for youth under age 8 • Don’t let the award become more important than the skills learned • High risk, make optional and minimize if possible • Needs rules & procedures • Leader’s attitude determines the intensity of the competition • Possible Examples: • trophies, plaques, scholarships, gifts

Recognition of… • Cooperation: helps youth learn and work cooperatively, prepares them for living in today's society • Nothing succeeds like Cooperation • 70% of youth prefer cooperation over competition • Involves all and recognizes all for teamwork • Attention is given to the way the group works together as well as the project • The ultimate goal is intrinsic not extrinsic • Community recognition, special trip, news release

  9. Research shows…. For recognition to be significant, it must: • Be timely • Be in front of peers • Be beneficial

Club Recognition • Club level recognition is a good way to encourage the cooperation, participation, and progress towards self-set goals principles of the 4-H Recognition Model. • Common honors include: perfect attendance, club officer, participation in service projects, public speaking, or citizenship activities. • This provides the most “personal” member recognition. • Can be formal/informal and both intrinsic/extrinsic– whatever fits best for your club.

Opportunities for Recognition in Utah County 4-H • Utah County Fair • County Contests • Achievement Nights • Portfolio Awards (scholarship to USU) • Horse Shows • Livestock Shows • Teen Leadership • Teen Council • County/State Ambassador • Various others • Scholarships to camp & retreats • 4-H Service Dollars • Leader Awards

Utah County Fair • Youth may exhibit items completed in their 4-H project • Danish System Judging: Entries are evaluated against a “standard.” All entries can earn top honors if they measure up to the standard. • Premium money & Ribbons • Purple state qualifier-$3.00 • Blue ribbon-$2.00 • Red ribbon-$1.50 • White ribbon-$1.00 • Green ribbon-$1.00 ( Minis - participation only – not judged)

County Contests • Everyone that participants receives a certificate • Judges select the top youth to be awarded, no ultimate winner is selected: • Minis (participation only) get a medal • Juniors & intermediates get trophies • Seniors get movie passes • Top Seniors are selected to compete at state competition • At state youth can win: • Savings bonds • Trips • State winner jacket • Prizes such as sewing machine/serger

  14. 4-H Achievement Night • County-wide 4-H awards program. • All members & leaders are invited to attend. • “4-H Achievement Awards for Participation” - $50.00 Gold: 25 pts+inventory+portfolio - $25.00 Silver: 20-24 pts - $10.00 Bronze: 15-19 pts • Contest trophy winners • Year certificates, seals, and pins

  15. 4-H Achievement Night cont. • Portfolio Awards • Category product awards • Junior, Intermediate, and Senior winner in each of the 8 enrollment categories • Plants & Animals • Healthy Lifestyles • Consumer & Family Sciences • Communication & Expressive Arts • Citizenship & Civic Education • Environmental & Earth Science • Science & Technology • Personal Development/Leadership • Top overall winners • $25.00 Junior • $50.00 Intermediate • $100.00 Senior • Senior youth compete for National trip and Scholarships to USU

  16. Horse Shows • Everyone receives certificate for participation • Ribbon stickers for places on individual events • Top youth receive trophy and opportunity to attend regional & state competitions • State winners receive various awards such as: • Trophies • Rosettes • Prizes such as Saddles, bridles etc.

Livestock Shows • Compete in Market Animal or Fitting and Showmanship • Beef • Hogs • Lambs • Several have Portfolio awards • Top market animal receives • Grand Champion • Banner, belt buckle & watch • Reserve Champion • Belt buckle • Third & Fourth Place • Top Showmanship • First & Second Place

Teen Leadership • Teen Council Members sponsor • 2 Super Saturday Events each year • Leader’s Banquet • Day Camp • State Contest County Night Out • Any teen interested can be involved • County Ambassadors sponsor • 2 countywide service projects each year • 2 junior teen retreats each year • Simple application – select 6-8 each year • State Ambassadors • Plan numerous events each year • Requires 3 month 4-H promotional project plus application to apply • 2 day selection interview with speeches - select 6-8 each year • 1 year term • Earn 4 year ½ tuition waiver scholarship to USU

  19. Service Dollars • Youth receive various amounts of service dollars for helping at 4-H activities • Service dollars can be used to pay for camps and retreats • This bonus supports the Cooperation principle of the 4-H Recognition Model

  20. Leaders Banquet Awards • Service Pins (5, 10, 15, etc.) • Salute to 4-H Volunteers • Alumni of the Year • Mentor of the Year • Clover Key Award • Doorknob Award • 4-H Family of the Year • Salute to 4-H Youth Leader Award (senior age youth) • 4-H Afterschool Award
