  2. Overall summary These chapters capture a much more personal look into Michael’s life. Not only does he continue with chapters full of descriptive scenes of Ceylon, but he also tells more stories about his own immediate family. Ranging from silly storytelling by Gillian to crazy episodes with his father, the stories in these chapters dive much deeper into the life of Michael and his family members.

  3. Harbour(133-134) • Michael describes his love for the Ceylon harbors and recalls a time when he had to say goodbye to his mother and sister. • Are there any memories that you connect with a particular place?

  4. Monsoon notebook (135-136) • Michael describes some of the wildlife that he saw in Ceylon. • Why does he turn on the tape recorder at night?

  5. How I was bathed (137-139) • Ondaatje writes about a family gathering in which his sister, Gillian, tells the story of Maratina giving them a bath. • Have you ever felt embarrassed by a family member telling a story about you? Share with each other.

  6. Wilpattu (140-143) • Ondaatje writes about some of his experience in going into the Wilpattu jungle with his family. • Why was the soap so important and how was it taken away from the Ondaatje family?

  7. Kuttapitiya (144-146) • Ondaatje describes the last estate the family lived in while he was a child. • Why did Michael’s father keep revamping the garden? • What did his father do to make Lalla start wearing gloves?

  8. Travels in ceylon (147-155) • Mervyn is a crazy dude. Michael describes scenes in which his father runs into a tunnel naked and stops a train because he believed there were bombs on board. • Why did Mervyn threaten to kill the train conductor the first train ride? (148) • What year was Mervyn ultimately banned from the Ceylon Railways? (152)

  9. Sir John (156-160) • Michael and Gillian visit their father’s friend, Sir John, and they talk about Mervyn among other things. • What did Sir John’s political opponents publish to make him lose the election? (159)

  10. Photograph (161-162) • Michael writes about the only picture of his mother and father that he could find. • What do you think Mervyn meant by “What we think of married life?”
