  4. Why STEAM? • At Blue Heron, we emphasize creative thinking, the design process, innovation, and aesthetics in design and presentation. • These are shared habits of mind in the Fine Arts and are aligned with the mission of the Port Townsend School District. • STEM + ART = STEAM!

Blue heron stem curriculum • Project Lead the Way • National STEM curriculum http://www.pltw.org/ • Gateway to Technology – middle school program • 2 Foundation Courses – • Design and Modeling • Automation and Robotics • Modules – offered as one-semester courses • Integrated with 6th grade Visual Arts – all students • Elective choice for 7th and 8th graders this year.

  17. Current course opportunities: • Design and Modeling • Students use an engineering notebook to document and capture their ideas. They are introduced to and use the design process to solve problems and understand the influence that creative and innovative design has on our lives. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio to showcase their creative solutions. • Automation and Robotics • Students trace the history, development, and influence of automation and robotics. They learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation and computer control systems. Students use a robust robotics platform to design, build and program a solution to solve an existing problem.

  21. The “Land Yacht” Students designed a “land yacht” out of cardboard, wood, beads, and paper. We defined the problem, discussed criteria and constraints of the problem, brainstormed,sketched, then constructed a vehicle with a sail and a balloon for propulsion.

  22. Artist Research - Sail Design The students also researched an artist of choice for “inspiration” for a sail design, wrote a paper on the artist and presented their work to their peers.

  24. Perseverance and FUN Students tested their vehicles outside with a partner and then refined any details needed for a better ride!

  26. Introduction to Engineering Software Autodesk Inventor • Lastly, we take all of the measurements of the parts of the land yacht and introduce the Autodesk Inventor software. • This allows students to create and assemble the parts of this project with the CAD software.

  28. Design & Modeling Objectives 7th/8th Grade Maintain an engineering notebook with ideas, sketches, and group process notes. Learn about the design process used by engineers and follow the process for design projects. Explore the Autodesk Inventor CAD program. Develop customary and metric measurement skills.
