    2. Offshore Wind Key Facts The UK, and Scotland especially, is a large market for renewable energy generation through its wind, wave, tidal, and bio-mass resources. The market demand for energy from these resources is driven by UK Government and Scottish Government aspirations and targets, linked to agreements made within the Kyoto Protocols; a world-wide agreement to reduce carbon emissions. These set targets to 2015, with aspirations until at least 2020. Scotland's potential offshore wind generating capacity is 25GW, with an average capacity figure of over 40% (which means that 40% of the time an offshore wind turbine will produce electricity at its full rated capacity). (Source: Scotlands renewable resource, Garrad Hassan, 2001 ) There are currently 2 offshore wind farms underconstruction in Scotland, one of which, Robins Rigg, when completed will be the largest in the UK (180MW). Scotland is leading the world in the development of deep water offshore wind farm deployment and construction with the Beatrice Offshore Wind Demonstrator project. This is using the largest turbines ever deployed offshore (5MW) in the deepest water (45M) and furthest from the shore (23km). Talisman Energy and Scottish & Southern Energy are planning to expand the Beatrice project to a 1GW wind farm (ie 200 wind turbines). Scotland has world leading expertise in offshore marine sector due to over 40 years research and development in the offshore oil and gas sector. Scotland has 25% of Europe's wind source (potential power output of 36.5 GW) (Source: Riso Institute, Denmark, 1989) The Scottish Government has set a target of 18% of electricity consumption in Scotland from renewable power which was achieved in 2005 (5 years early). (Source: DTI Energy Trends 2006 & DTI UK Digest of Energy Statistics 2006) There is a target of 40% electricity consumption from renewable sources in Scotland by 2020 (compared with 20% for the same period for the rest of the UK). (Source: UK Government White Paper Our energy future creating a low carbon economy, February 2003)

    3. Offshore Wind Marketing Messages Generic Renewable Messages At 59.1 GW, Scotlands potential renewable resources are very large. Scotlands domestic electric energy requirement is approximately 10.5 GW so theres a large potential to export sustainable energy. (Source:Scotlands Renewable Resource, Garrad Hassan, 2001) The Scottish Government has set a target of 31% of electricity consumption in Scotland from renewable power by 2011. There is a target of 50% electricity consumption from renewable sources in Scotland by 2020 (compared with 20% for the same period for the rest of the UK). the rest of the UK). There is a strong demand for renewable energy, driven by Government targets and the Renewable Obligations. Scotland is leading the field in the research and commercialisation of renewable energy resources such as, wave/tidal stream, offshore wind, hydro and fuel cell technology. With 42% and 37% respectively, hydroelectric and onshore wind power represent the bulk of new capacity being installed throughout the period 2003-2007. There are over 140 renewable sites in Scotland. 43 of these are onshore wind farms Offshore Wind Energy Messages Scotland has 25% of Europes wind resource. Source:Scotlands Renewable Resource, Garrad Hassan, 2001) Scotland has a welcoming regime for inward investing renewable energy businesses. Such as Vestas and REpower are already in Scotland, serving offshore market in the rest of the UK. Due to the extensive experience in the Scottish Oil & Gas Industry: a strong component supply chain exists, and the development agencies are assisting further diversification in to renewable energy sector activity. There is a pool of skilled labour, with competitive wage rates and social taxation costs. Facilities with deep water port access exist to accommodate re-location of turbine, tower and blade manufacturing facilities. At present there is 190 MW of offshore wind energy projects under construction Scotland (Source: BWEA, 2007) Scotland is leading the world in the development of deep water offshore wind farm deployment and construction with the Beatrice Offshore Wind Demonstrator project.
