  1. SALVATIONPlanned in Eternity, Displayed in CommunityBe Imitators of GodEphesians 5:1-14

  2. Ephesians 5:1-14 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you

  3. were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

  4. 3 Questions: 1. What does it mean to imitate God? To imitate God is to allow the manifestation of God in our lives. To imitate is not to “play God” but to conform self to God’s will. “imitate” mimētēs “imitator”

  5. 3 Questions: 1. What does it mean to imitate God? His attributes fall into 2 categories: > Non-Communicable– cannot imitate – they belong to God alone Omnipresence, omniscience, omnipotence > Communicable – can imitate – Divine attributes that are to be manifested in our daily living.

  6. 3 Questions: 1. What does it mean to imitate God? Moral attributes: - Love (1 Jn 4:8) - Holiness (1 Pet 1:14-16) - Goodness [including Mercy, Grace] (v. 9) - Righteousness (Isa 45:19) - Jealousy - Wrath

  7. 3 Questions: 1. What does it mean to imitate God? 2.Why are we to be imitators of God? > Because we are commanded to imitate Him - “be” [Imperative] > Because we are His beloved children [Indicative] “children” (tekna) those born from Him. Eph 1:5 “In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will”

  8. 3 Questions: 1. What does it mean to imitate God? 2.Why are we to be imitators of God? > Because we are commanded to imitate Him > Because we are His beloved children * It is not law that drives or motivates us to be like God. It is His love for us that draws us to be like our Heavenly Father. We obey because we are loved; we are not loved because we obey. The love of our Father precedes and stimulates the obedience of his children.

  9. 3 Questions: 1. What does it mean to imitate God? 2.Why are we to be imitators of God? > Because we are commanded to imitate Him > Because we are His beloved children Eph 2:4 “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved”

  10. 3 Questions: 1. What does it mean to imitate God? 2.Why are we to be imitators of God? 3. How are we to imitate God? > God is love. (1 Jn 4:8) > Walk in love (5:1-2) > God is Holy. (1 Pet 1:16) > Walk in purity (5:3-7) > God is light. (1 Jn 1:5) > Walk in the light (5:8-14)

  11. 1. Walk In Love (5:1-2) 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 1 John 4:8 “Anyone who does not love does not know God because God is love.”

  12. 1. Walk In Love (5:1-2) Paul has already said: > Our walk is to be a worthy walk (4:1; Col 1:10; 1 Thess 2:11-12) . >Our walk is to be different from the world (4:17) > Our walk is to be done with wisdom (5:15) > Now we are to walk in love (v. 2) and walk as children of light (v. 8).

  13. 1. Walk In Love (5:1-2) People push love but they don’t tell you what it is. They live in the realm of human love which is sentimental and self focused at best. God’s love is explained through the theology of the cross.

  14. 1. Walk in Love (5:1-2) “as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”(v. 2) 1 John 4:10 “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

  15. 2. Walk In Purity (5:3-7) 3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them;

  16. 2. Walk In Purity (5:3-7) Eph 1:4 “Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.”

  17. 2. Walk In Purity (5:3-7) What are the sins that threaten our purity? Two realms of sins (vv. 3-4) > Sexual sins (v. 3) “sexual immorality”-- (porneia) prostitution, fornication “all impurity” – unrestrained sexual behavior “covetousness” – desire to have more – insatiable desires A person who is covetous is an “idolater.”

  18. 2. Walk In Purity (5:3-7) What are the sins that threaten our purity? Two realms of sins (vv. 3-4) > Sexual sins (v. 3) Col 3:5-7 “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.”

  19. 2. Walk In Purity (5:3-7) What are the sins that threaten our purity? Two realms of sins (vv. 3-4) > Sexual sins (v. 3) > Sins of speech (v. 4; 4:29-31) Eph. 4:29 “Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there bethanksgiving.”

  20. 2. Walk In Purity (5:3-7) How can we fight sin and stay pure? >Let there be thanksgiving (v. 4d) Romans 1:21 “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”

  21. 2. Walk In Purity (5:3-7) If fornication and impurity are driven by covetousness, and covetousness is a deep discontented craving that dominates your life and even leads you to go against the will of God, then it is clear that the opposite experience would be thanksgiving. If you are overflowing with thanksgiving to God, then you are not dominated and driven by discontentment at what you have been denied. . ..

  22. 2. Walk In Purity (5:3-7) Dethroning God
In other words, the root problem about being driven by the domination of earthly desires is that it dethrones God. So when Paul puts gratitude in the place of covetousness, he is simply putting God in the place of man, and specifically he is putting God in the place of self. Gratitude is the opposite of covetousness because it enthrones God. Gratitude says that God is the satisfaction of all my longings. Covetousness says that God is not adequate as a satisfying treasure; I must have money or I must have sex—God will not suffice!
John Piper

But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

  39. 3. Walk In Light (5:8-14) 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light.
