This project focuses on designing a device that prevents toddlers from accidentally turning on gas knobs, reducing cooking-related accidents at home. Through ethnographic studies, we identified the unique needs of parents with young children, especially emphasizing safety and ease of use. Our prototype utilizes durable materials and innovative designs to ensure both functionality and child safety. Feedback has highlighted its effectiveness in reducing gas activation, making homes safer for families. This project presents a valuable investment opportunity with a strong focus on child safety standards.

Ethnography study: people • Children like to play with gas knobs • Jan-dec 2011, 500 fires caused by unattended cooking fires (source: scdf) • Total 1050 accidents caused by gas fires • Inhalation of cooking gas (even once) causes: • Muscle weaknessLack of coordinationmay cause breathing difficulties and/or heart failure. • Cooking gas contains many toxins • height of a child aged (2-4) is around 85.1 cm to 100.1 cm
Ethnography study: objects Gas knob sizes
Ethnography study: objects Brands of hobs all of the brands require little effort to turn on the gas turbo hobz elba aerogaz rinnai
Ethnography study:environment • Kitchens are the main environment around stoves. • Stoves can get oily, or be exposed to water • Stoves are exposed to large amounts of heat • Stoves operate near fire • Most people require convenience in kitchens • There is a lot of objects in a kitchen • Little space for placing items
Ethnography study: services • cooking gas delivery • Cooking • Boiling water
Needs from ethnography study there is a need: • to prevent children from turning on the gas • to prevent making the gas knob easy to turn on for children • to ensure the material is made of fire-proof materials • for the material to resist cooking oils and dirt • for convenience in operating for parents • for simplicity in the design • to fit the knobs in the market • To fit multiple knobs
Design statement • To design a device which prevents toddlers from turning on the gas knob, that is easy for parents to unlock and simple to use. • Target audience: 2-4 year old children
Prototype material Advantages: • Use of polypropylene • Resistant to heat, food and acids. • Cheap easy to produce Disadvantages: • not very resistant to UV light • Can decay over time
Final prototype design • Medicine cap design to stop children from opening • Use of blind rivets to anchor thread into hob or comes with thread installed by the hob brand itself to facilitate the locking procedure. • For solid existing hobs, use of super glue is required for installation
User feedback • Mrszhang said • disabled parents might not be able to use it • the product allowed parents who could not always keep watch feel safer as they face 1 less danger • 9/10 • Mrskhor said • Product is fast and efficient • Helps reduce accidental gas activation • Might be too easy to figure out
