Engage students in critical thinking about fracking through media literacy lessons, preparing them to be stewards of natural resources. Program includes interactive media assignments and fosters awareness of environmental impacts.

Goals of Our APP • To make strong sense critical thinking a habit of our students in a media-oriented world. • To prepare students to be effective managers and informed stewards of our natural resources. • To make students aware of a local “hot topic” in Environmental Science that will inevitably affect their lives.
Goals of Our APP • To create a group of concerned young citizens. • To foster sustainable outlooks and ways of living for our students. • To reinforce the mentality that “we all live downstream.” • To create a lesson kit with Project LookSharp about SlickwaterHydrofracking, and make it accessible to teachers across New York State.
Goals of Our APP • To give students the opportunity to create and present a persuasive piece of media according to an assigned role. • To encourage students to be conscious of their audience, principles of media construction, and their intended message as they prepare their media.
Context • 2 sections of high school Environmental Science • Juniors and Seniors (one freshman!) • Elective course, 40 weeks • No “formal” curriculum standards • Issues-oriented • Already incorporated media literacy during introduction to the course • Weekly media-based assignments (journals)
