  1. SMART MATERIALS

  2. Smart Materials • A smart material is a material that changes its properties in response to its environment. • CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE • CHANGES IN LIGHT/DARKNESS • It can repeat this change again and again.

  3. Thermo chromic

  4. SMA (SHAPE MEMORY ALLOYS) If a part made from a shape memory alloy (SMA) is bent out of shape, when it is heated to a certain temperature it will return to its original shape. They can be used to make products switch between two shapes or ‘repair damage’, for example, to mend bent spectacle frames. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKBM9my5eOA

  5. EXAMPLES OF SMA

  7. Photochromic paint Photochromic materials change their colour in response to changes in light.

  8. Photochromic examples

  9. QTC (Quantum Tunneling Composites) Most materials either allow electricity to pass through them or don’t allow it. Normally, quantum tunnelling composite (QTC) does not allow electricity to pass through it. However, when it is squeezed, electricity can pass through it easily.

  10. Examples QTC • Quantum-tunnellingcomposite (QTC) is a flexible polymer which contains tiny metal particles. It is normally an insulator but if it is squeezed it becomes a conductor.
