  3. Housing • Row Housing – Single family dwelling for working-class families that shared side walls with other similar houses. • Rainbow Row in Charleston

  4. Housing • Tenement Housing – multi-family urban dwelling that were overcrowded & unsanitary. • House poor immigrants at a cheapen price.

  5. Settlement Housing • Settlement Housing – a community center providing assistance to residents: • Helping assimilate (particularly immigrants) • Helped cultivate social responsibility toward the urban poor. • Founded by social reformers.

  7. Other issues • Transportation – Mass transit • Pollution – water, air, land & noise • Crime – Increased in the cities

  10. Farming moved to cities looking for jobs due to: • Falling crop prices • Defaulting on bank loans & losing their farms. • More jobs became available as WWI intensified. • The lure of a rich cultural life or excitement. Farmers moving.

Airplanes • Created by the Wright brothers. • Original bicycle manufacturers • Would eventually create the U.S. airplane system. • Central Park • City planners wanted to create recreational areas for serenity environment. • New York government created Central Park, with Frederick Olmsted as lead designer. • Would still be an dominant location still today.
