  1. LCI/ IND 101Survey Results Fall 2007 Analysis by I. Hibschweiler and Mimi Steadman

  2. Data Collections • Survey was approved by CAC and distributed to all IND 101 classes during Fall 07. • The survey included 16 out of 18 sections resulting in 278 respondents.

  3. Questions 1-6 • Q1: My IND 101 experience helped me make new friends: • Q2: My IND 101 experience helped me participate in classroom discussion: • Q3: My IND 101 experience helped me to get to know faculty better: • Q4: My IND 101 experience encouraged me to attend on-campus activities: • Q5: My LCI experience helped me see the connection between IND 101 and the linked thematic course: • Q6: My IND 101 experience made me think and talk about ideas that I learned, in class, outside the class:

  4. Analysis – Questions 1-6 • The data provided evidence that LCI helped students: • Make new friends(83%*), participate in classroom discussion(73%*), get to know the faculty better(57%*), participate on campus activities(56%*), and think and talk about ideas learned in class outside the class(72%*) . • More detailed data appear below *Percentage of those either agree or strongly agree

  5. Comparing LCI and LCII • In an effort to evaluate our LC program, a Survey in LCII, Spring 06 and 07, included 5 questions that were the same as the questions in LCI, Fall 06 and Fall 07. The table below summarize the results of both surveys in 5 different categories. • Note that on the average 80% of students in the LC II (compared to only 52% in the LC I) reported that their LC experienced helped them see the connection between the linked courses.

  6. Comparing LCI and LCII continued • Also note, as expected for LC with a first-year-experience design, that on average 80% of students in the LC I (compared to only 65% in the LC II) reported that their LC experienced helped them make friends.

  7. LCI and LCII Results for Same Survey QuestionsPercentage of Agree or Strongly Agree

  8. Comparing LCI and Non LC • A similar survey was given in freshmen core non LC classes in order to if student Reponses in LC classes are different from those in non LC classes. The data indicate that students are more engaged in campus activity, make friends, and more engaged in class discussion when enrolled in LC classes vs non LC classes. See table below for data summary.

  9. LCI and LCII Results for Same Survey QuestionsPercentage of Agree or Strongly Agree

  10. Question 7 • In a short paragraph, explain what the IND 101 course was about. • A content analysis of open-ended responses to the question resulted in 8 categories of how the students described what the IND 101 course was about. Some students left this item blank, while other students’ responses included multiple categories, resulting in 511 responses from the 278 students.

  11. Question 7 Analysis • When comparing the responses for questions 7 from Fall 06 and Fall 07 survey the responses were very similar and they indicated that the students recognize IND 101 as introduction to college life, the core and personnel and academic growth as the chart below illustrates.

  12. Question 7 Comparison

  13. Question 7 Comparison Continued

  14. Question 8 • In brief, describe the connection between IND 101 and the linked thematic course. • The responses were analyzed to find if the student recognized the content link in their section of the LC. The result of the survey in Fall 07 indicated that the students were able to indentify the content link at a higher percentage in Fall 07 than Fall 06.

  15. Question 8 Analysis Continued • For example 90% of the students were able to describe the content link between the two classes in F07 compared to 72% in F06. Note that a session for LCI Instructors was held in August 2007 to provide them planning time to work on the content link of their LC section, however no such session was available in the previous year.

  16. Question 8 Analysis Continued • When the data were analyzed by class section, the results indicated differences among the LC 1 sections. • In 10 out of 16 sections, students reported a strong content link. • None of the sections completing the survey in Fall 2007 indicated no or minimum link, compared to 4 sections out of 17 in Fall 06 that reported no or minimum link.

  17. Question 8 Comparison

  18. Question 9 • Is there anything that you have learned in your IND 101 class that will affect what you do from now on? Explain. • A content analysis of open-ended responses to the question resulted in 8 categories of student responses to the question above.

  19. Question 9 Analysis • When comparing the responses for question 9 from Fall 06 and Fall 07 survey the responses were very similar and they indicated that the students recognize that IND 101 help them grow by exposing them to the competencies and liberal arts and lifelong learning. See table below for details.

  20. Question 9 Comparison

  21. Question 9 Comparison

  22. Question 10 • A space was left for the students to enter a comment on the survey. 62 out of 278 students entered comments and these comments were grouped in similar categories in the table below.

  23. Question 10 Analysis • When comparing the comments that students made for question 10, from Fall 06 and Fall 07 survey, the responses were very similar and they indicated that approximately 60% of the students that made comments find the course and the teacher to be fun. Students also made comments about not liking the course linked to IND 101. See chart below.

  25. CAC Recommendations Space surveys two years apart. LCs are maturing and working as expected. Coordinate with other surveys. Continue to improve IND 101 course. Data indicate that the course is achieving its goals. Investigate various models and resources, (such as scheduling, incentives, planning time and compensation) to help LC faculty maximize the content link and engage students.
