SCAMS SPAMS Scams vs. Spams • Have a goal to TAKE something from you • Try to GIVE you something FOR SOMETHING from you (give you love for your money, example) • Try to GET or TAKE your money, identity or personal information • Lie, offer something, for greed or gain • Rip you off • Illegal • Advertising, beg that you did not ask for, and you do not want • Says useless stuff • Actual informationmay be legal, ie. Offer for money, insurance, college degree on line, etc. • Send for fun, Annoying, like JUNK MAIL • Pop up windows • Unpleasant, Undesirable, but Legal

More about Scams.. • A "scam" is a fraud planto cheat you out of your money. • This looks like advertisement - such as ”HELP WANTED” • Always involves YOU SEND money to someone else and GETNOTHING BACK.

Dating & Romance Scams “Dating and romance scams try to lower your defenses by capture your love feelings(romantic and compassionate side).” • Chaseyou into dating and romance website. • Hook you in by continuing to send you a email filled with talk of love. • Building a friendship with you, by sending you flowers or small gifts. • Then when in love (relationship”, will ask for money to transfer out of country.
Internet Scams • You will get replies from millions of emails they send out –don’t click unsubscribe • Email from sender you do not know, is not specifically addressed to you is highly likely to be SPAM. “A lot of Internet scams happening without you noticing.” Use the internet to promote fraud through “did not ask for” or junk emails known as SPAM.
Money Transfer requests • The Nigerian scam are increasingly referred to as “advance fee fraud”. • A lawyer or bank representative advising that a long-lost family member of yours has died and left you a huge money from will. “Once you send money to someone, it can be hard, and impossible, to get your money back.”
Identity Theft “Identity theft happens when someone takes the personal information of another person and use it without their knowledge or consent.” • Identity thieves steal your name and other pieces of personal information • Credit Card, SIN, Driver License, etc… • Once they steal the information, identity thieves invade your personal and financial life.
Moving Scams Lisa’s experience • CRAIGSLIST: “$800 / 2br - 900ft² - Burnaby Royal Oak skytrain station 2 bedroom condo for rent (Burnaby)” • Wont give key until payment • Mail key not meet at apartment to look at place • Pictures deceiving – “too good to be true” • Secretary phoned number, investigate address, and management company and found fraud.
Moving Scams My name is Jude Butler own the 2 bedroom and 2 Bath home and its located @ 5155 Watling St, Burnaby, BC V5J 1W5, Canada. and also want you to know that it was due to my transfer that makes me my wife and son to leave the house and also want to give it out for rent and looking for a responsible person that can take very good care of the property has we will be here for 3 years. as we are not after the money for the rent but want it to be clean at the time and the person that will rent it to take it as if it were its own. So for now, We are here in west Africa and put all our worries off concerning the maintenance of the apartment. since we are not residing there for now. We left behind some Facilities and electronics which include the rent, and a DVD player, air conditioning, alarm system. The kitchen is fully equipped with all necessary cooking utensils, freezer, four-hob and oven, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine, our Computer is Connected with Internet Access and a good parking space. Also the keys to the House are right here with us. How to recognize Scams Scams can contain the following: Alarmist messages and threats of account closures. Promises of money for little or no effort. Deals that sound too good to be true. Requests to donate to a charitable organization after a disaster that has been in the news. Bad grammar and misspellings. “God Bless You”
What is Spam? • Not relatedor inappropriate (rude, sexist, manipulative, false, etc.) messages sent on the Internet to a large number of people.
More about Spam.. Spam is any kind of “I don’t want” online communication. The most common form of spam is EMAIL. You can also get TEXT message spam, INSTANT MESSAGE spam, and social (Facebook, Twitter, etc) networking spam. Some spam is annoy but harmless. However, some spam is part of an identity theft scam or other kind of fraud. Identity theft spam is often called a phishing scam.

Email Spam • Email spam, also known as junk mail. • It send “I don’t want” email messages to many people. • Virus install a “backdoor” which allows spammers to access the computer and use it for anything.
Social Networking Spam • Facebook and Twitter are not immune(block) to messages containing spam links. • Spammers hack (break in) into accounts and send false links under the guise of a your trusted contacts such as friends and family.
Video sharing sites • The most common probleminvolves people posting links to sites • Porno (XXX) • Online dating • Random comments
Phishing • Type of identity theft where criminals use email to try to bait you into fake websites. • Once you get there, you are asked to give confidential financial and personal information, for example: • your passwords • credit card number • access codes • SIN’s.

Phishing What is inside of a phishing e-mail or text message has the reason to trigger QUICK REACTION from YOU. It can either be upsetting or exciting information, demanding an URGENT response or employ a false statement. These messages will ask you to “update,” “proof,” or confirm your account information or face punishments/dire consequences. Often has “REAL”logos and other identifying information taken directly(copy and paste) from real company’s websites.

PROTECT YOURSELF: Internet Scams • REMEMBER: If you choose to shop online becareful that you are not overcharged. Make purchases from genuine shopping sites. • CAUTION: Never buy from bidders with poor ratings. • THINK: Don’t reply to spam emails, even to unsubscribe. • INVESTIGATE: If an email or pop-up offers you a product or service that genuinely interests you and it seems reasonable, read all the fine print. ASK YOURSELF… By opening this suspect email, will I risk the security of my computer?
PROTECT YOURSELF: Dating Scams • REMEMBER: Check website addresses carefully. • CAUTION: Never send money, or give credit card or online account details to anyone. • THINK: Don’t give out any personal information in an email or online. • INVESTIGATE: Make sure you only use legitimate and reputable dating websites. ASK YOURSELF… Would someone declare their love for me after only a few emails?
