  2. Simple Reference • A simple reference is a file attached to the active, or master file in a read-only manner for viewing and plotting purposes. Simple Reference Attachment OG.dgn Plan Sheet RW.dgn Design.dgn

  3. Reference Dialog Box • One typical plan sheet would have three reference files.

  4. Nested Reference • A nested reference is a reference file that is attached to a file that is itself attached to another file. Nested References Plan Sheet File Parent Reference OG.dgn Design.dgn RW.dgn

  5. Reference Dialog Box • One typical plan sheet with nested references would have one reference file.

  6. Reference Attachment Settings dialog box • No Nesting — Files attached to the attached file are not recognized in the active file. • Live Nesting — If on, the hierarchical structure of any nested references are maintained when attaching the parent reference to a file. When you attach a reference that has one or more attachments, and if you set the Nest Depth high enough, all of the nested attachments display in the view window. • Copy Attachments — Files attached to the attached file copied directly into the active file, disregarding the hierarchical structure of the nested references. When you attach a reference that has one or more attachments, and if you set the Nest Depth high enough, all of the attachments are displayed in the view window, and all of the attachments (parent and any nested references) are listed in the References dialog box's list box as individual attachments.

  7. No Nesting • If you select the No Nesting setting, the nested references will not show up in the plan sheet file. Nested References Plan Sheet File Parent Reference OG.dgn Design.dgn RW.dgn

  8. Live Nesting • Selecting the Live nesting setting with a depth of 1 allows the nested references to show up in the plan sheet file. Nested References Plan Sheet File Parent Reference OG.dgn Design.dgn RW.dgn

  9. Copy Attachments • Selecting the Copy Attachment Setting, results in each of the reference files being attached independent of each other directly to the Plan sheet file. Nested References Plan Sheet File Parent Reference OG.dgn Design.dgn RW.dgn

  10. Attachment Settings dialog box • You can set the Live Nesting options from the Attachment Settings dialog box after they are attached. • In live nesting the depth determines how many generations of nesting are recognized in the active file. • If you activate the Ignore Attachment When Live Nesting setting, the reference will be ignored if it becomes a nested reference, even if live nesting is enabled in the parent reference. This allows you to display certain nested references and ignore others.

  11. Ignore Attachment When Live Nesting • If Ignore Attachment When Live Nesting is toggled on for the RW file in this example, the RW file will not display in the Plan Sheet file even though Live Nesting to a Depth of 1 is turned on. Grayscale • How do I get the OG file to show up as grayscale in the Plan Sheet if it nested through the Design file? • If you attached the OG file to the Design file with the characters “exist” in the logical name, it will show up in the plan sheet file in grayscale.   13. Show Hierarchy Button • To see the nested references in the Reference dialog box, click on the Show Hierarchy button.

  14. Show Hierarchy Button • The Show Hierarchy button allows you to see the nested references attached to the parent reference in a tree format.

  15. Using Level Display with Nested References • Use the Show Target Tree button to see nested references • Right click on a file to turn Display on or off.

  16. Tips to Help Manage Nested References • Make all your changes in the Parent Reference. • Levels, Clip Masks, Clip Boundaries, etc. • Keep your nesting depth low. • Hover over elements to get a yellow pop up box with helpful information about elements. • Use the design file as the Parent Reference. • Use Nested References to keep the Reference dialog box list short. • A Nested Reference will come in exactly in same location as the Parent Reference when it is attached. • Nested References move and rotate with their Parent Reference so they will not get misaligned.
